2010 iMac power issues when sleeping?

Hi guys,
My parents have a late 2010 base spec iMac (21.5" i3) which apparently keeps powering itself off in sleep randomly....

Now, I've never encountered a similar problem with my 2009 iMac, nor have I witnessed the issue myself on their machine so I'm taking their word for it for now.

They tell me they put the machine to sleep from the user account screen after use as normal, however sometimes when they attempt to wake it the next day they have to physically press the power button on the back of the machine to boot it up rather than wake it up which obviously takes a lot longer.

I've checked the battery levels in both BT mouse and keyboard, and also plugged the power cord directly into the socket as it was previously plugged into an adaptor block, but they've reported the issue again since.

Has anybody else encountered a similar problem, or aware of any documented component failures in this particular vintage of iMac which could account for this issue? I'm reluctant to take it into the Apple store just yet as I can't reproduce the issue on demand.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions :D
