2011 A level results day thread

Contact the university directly. Also it's very much worth getting a remark if you think you might have done better.

Its maths im missing out on and i quite doubt they have mismarked it but may be worth it.
Already phoned the uni, they aren't allowed to tell people what their chances are. Most people i personally know who got pending at this stage get accepted but don't have my hopes up.

I got DCB. Was expecting to get a bit better but I've got into the uni I've wanted, so I'm not too bothered :P

Congratz to everyone who got their results today :)

Any English folk going to a Scottish university?

Next week would be a good time to scope out the area, Glasgow meet is on ;) (though the first question is a serious one, has anyone considered it?).

What are the most competitive subjects? I was looking at Physics, only I'll be resitting AS year, will this significantly damage my chances?

My Brother did, for his first year at least... then he had a child and decided he wanted him to have a 'proper upbringing' in Newcastle

Still, he was at Stirling, University was great - as a city perhaps not that much but i think he enjoyed it. Just prepare to get a lot of (playful) stick from the Scottish students and know that you will be expected to pick one of their two football teams to support :p

I thought that's a given?

1. Set your standard offer to AAA
2. Receive more applicants than there are places (All of whom have AAA because that's the entrance requirement)
3. Reject some of them.

no? if they given you a conditional offer for AAA, they will accept you. i'm not sure if theres any legal stuff from stopping them rejecting you but thats bad practise and bad application experiences is bad for universities.

what they usually do is to take interviews, thus why you did a personal statement & all. i think they get your predicted grades so they can filter a lot of people of the bat there, then they interview people and gives offers to the best to full up the exact ammount of seats on the course. oviously since you have an insurance choice, this means there will now be empty seats which causing clearance :)

& to AS people, it really does pay to have a really good personal statement. my interviews were just lolable tbh whilst many of mates got pwned lol.

& for the AAA case, i think his choices did consist of grades requirement which needed the new A*. top of my head uni's like oxford require A* in maths but also manchester requires an A* for computer science Meng.

Core subjects like English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are quite competitive, and then you have subjects like Law, Engineering and Medicine which are about as, if not a bit more competitive. As for resitting a year it may raise questions as to why you've taken three years to do your A-levels, but I doubt many admissions tutors will base an application solely off of that. Your personal statement, reference and predicted results are far more important.

I think what TheCenturion means is for universities to set the minimum requirements to AAA rather than the minimum offer i.e. in the prospectus it will say that you require AAA with one of those subjects being in maths or whatever.

You're right though, if they've said you've got a conditional offer of a place based on you getting AAA and you've accepted it as a firm choice then provided you meet your end of the bargain they shouldn't be rejecting you. Prior to making the offer they may have any number of people predicted (and eventually achieving AAA) that they will reject for whatever reason.
