Hey all!

Looking to buy myself a imac mainly to be used for video and photo editing and as a main computer(the move from pc to mac etc)and all other computer stuff.

The thing is I cannot decide on what CPU or GPU to chose, iv been looking on the apple site for just over 2 weeks trying to decide what specification to chose and also doing research into mac etc. Ram is not a issue because I know that can be upgraded in the future if needed.
I cannot seem to work out myself if I will need to extra power in the future, yes I know it will be good for the future but is it worth it for a 1st mac computer?

Specs so far:

27-inch iMac
3.1GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
or
3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 extra £160

4GB ram
1TB HDD

AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1GB
or
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB extra £80

Thanks in advance for your help guys also how did you find the switch from pc to mac?

I say go for the 3.4 i7 but stick to the 1gb 6970. Should be the best option for video/photo editing.

the i7 has hyperthreading as well? so little bit of a boost again.

I think the Graphics would be a waste, I know you're getting an extra 1GB of memory but for £80 I don't think its worth it.

For the CPU I would probably go for the i7 (That's if I had the money for it)

If you can't afford I'm sure the i5 will be sufficient for what you need it for :)

But I would wait for more experience Mac users to post :)

I forgot it had hyperthreading that will be a good little bonus for me also.

thanks to you both

If you don't play games then get the cheaper one. Actually to be honest even if you do the faster GPU won't make much difference as everything would be dog slow still at native res.

It's only a little extra CPU power, you wouldn't notice it.

well thats balderdash for a start.

My Late 2009 27" imac plays source games just fine at native res (granted with lack of AA + AF)

And thats got a 4850 512mb. The new ones will fly !
