OCUK,

My 2011 MBP is occasionally making strange noises, sounding like something small is occasionally getting stuck in a fan. My first thought was that the HDD was knackered, but if a HDD was making regular noises like that, surely it'd be dead by now?

The noise is coming from somewhere vaguely central and I can't replicate it, it just happens now and then. Once every 5-10 mins. It seems to be coming from (I estimate) the F, G, V, B area.

The disk drive always has made a noise if it had a disk in it and you moved the laptop when it was accessing data on the disk, but this is a different noise. There is no disk in the drive either.

One of the rubber feet is missing, so my guess is that a small piece of FOD has got inside via that small hole and is now obstructing the fan (maybe?).

Any suggestions?

I plan on removing the back of it to investigate tonight, but wondered if there were any ideas in case I can't see anything obvious.

The fans on MBPs are really mellow and don't spin very quick on idle (1kish) so you can just stick your finger on it to stop it. That should let you know if it's the fan making the noise. Quick go with air duster should sort it if so.
