It seems to build my system a 1155 system works out the same cost as my 2011 system (within £100).

Should I go for the 2011 system? Will the 2011 system have more pats available or have intel stopped and focusing on the new 1150 chipset?

2011 will allow you to upgrade in the future, 1155 is now a dead socket but will still have great performance. It comes down to when your going to upgrade in the future, going 1155 will mean you'll need a new motherboard and CPU in the future, where as 2011 you'll just need a new CPU.

2011 is the way forward mate.
I absolutely loved my setup, I am gutted I am having to sell it, but if it were me, for £100, id get the 2011. As mentioned, its going to last longer as a good perfomer (1155 is good, but they are still potentially making s2011 CPU's) the 3930k is probably the best bang for buck cpu out there. Get the 2011.
It also holds its value well, check out used prices of a 3930k, they were 480 or so new, still go for 400ish on the bay.

The question should be 2011 or 1150 :)

I should say I agree with this but you can only future proof so far until cost becomes an issue.

What you should ask yourself is does the current availability meet your requiremetns and if so, by how much. Its the buffer that you have which will determine its suitability but also, if you don't foresee your needs changing any time soon then it doesn't make sense to pay for the latest and greatest which costs the most! :)

I personally went with the best 1155 socket motherboard and fastest ivybridge CPU. That way, I know i've purchased something stable, has high overclocking potential yet still performs (at stock speed) at a level which is well within my needs

3930K Best bang for buck??

I am not saying OP should go AMD at any rate, but your statement is untrue. Even an FX-8350 is much better bang for buck. Mostly by 40%.

See my comparison here using AnandTech scores divided by price for Higher = Better and multiplied for Lower = Better.

He was talking in relative terms, between the 2011 i7's and the 1155 i7's the 3930k is the best bang for buck.

Uhm *facepalm* only if the OP is using his 2011 rig for VM's/Video editing/Anything that uses a lot of RAM/threaded tasks.

Not really. Im talking bang for buck because it is massively powerful, retains it value (They still sell for £479 here!) they are 6 core so theoretically should last longer than 1155 in terms of being a very capable machine, and the price difference in builds are not significantly different. and compare the 3930k with the 3970x, which is like 800 quid, theres very little between the two. so for socket 2011, it is the best.
if your on a budget, id still go socket 2011 and get a 3820. as good as a 2600k except overclocking isnt as good, doable, but not as easily. However, this allows you to chuck in a socket 2011 cpu later, that is better. 2011 will be supported what with ivy bridge E coming whenever it does. (hopefully anyway).

Mhm but it's not massively bang for buck when it's the enthausist range of CPU/Motherboards really is it?

Just because its enthusiast doesnt mean its not bang for buck, You can spend £1200 on a 3770k setup, and you can spend £1200 on a 3930k setup, id go 3930k every time.
X79 boards have come down in price, they are now quite affordable.

Its not really bang for buck, 1155 (soon to be 1150) holds that.

If you don't use 6 cores for what you do its money wasted. Very few programs use 6 cores. Heavy video editing and are amount the exceptions.

Yeah, the 3930k resells for a good price now but as soon as Ivy-E, haswell-E comes out the prices will plummit.

What im getting at is itll be able to perform a lot better than an 1155 cpu in a few years, and seeing as ivy E hasnt come out when they are releasing haswell now, i wouldnt hold my breathe on haswell e anytime soon, its not even worth mentioning really.

Its the best bang for buck in the high end market, bang for buck for me, is good resale value, good performance, good overclocking, criteria this cpu matches all of.

Gamer browser general use best bang for buck is 1155 or soon to be 1150. X79 is only good for those needing threads and cores and its expensive for decent kit.
