out of the 2011v3 range what xeon cpu's are good for gaming.
as a person the is no to bothered about overclocking i was thinking i could save a few ££'s and get a xeon if the savings are worth it.

5820k is fine for gaming too. I moved from a 4790k at 4.7ghz. Even at stock in not finding the 5820k to hold back gaming performance. I have done a bit of clocking on it to 4.5ghz, but haven't tested it a lot.

Agreed, 5820K is a beast for gaming, decent temps VS the mainstream as well. Impressed by 5820K I would say it's best value Intel chip since Q6600 back in the day etc..

Temp wise in games, at 4.5 on similair voltage as my 4790k was at 4.7. The 5820k maxes at 64c on the hottest core, 75c on the 4790k.

Yep, just the warranty. 3 years on retail. Until X79 Intel also supplied a cooler with retail chips. This has ceased with skylake now too.

No coolers with skylake or 2011. Probably is a cost cutting exercise, and imho the stock coolers are barely upto the task of cooling modern chips. I had the misfortune of having to use one on the 4790k for a few days. Anything more demanding than surfing the net resulted in crazy high temps.

yes but lower end CPU should still have one. i have in my media center on a pentium k.
Any cpu with K need a better than stock cooler

Yes, all the 1150 chips come with the stock cooler. Of the 1151 Skylake chips, I think it's just the K chips that don't come with a stock cooler.

You've answered your own question. Should they still have one? well no, they're completely insufficient. That's why Intel don't bother, as no stock sized cooler could handle a hex core.

They would need to make something far bigger and far more costly for a 5820k, so they leave that cost up to you.

Generally I've noticed aio's being recommended for X99 if overclocking, high end air like I'm using will do ok with them too.

intel gave a 92mm tower cooler with the 1366 hex core's that putout more heat, and a larger type top down cooler with 2011 x79 hex core cpu's

i think its more intel pinching penney's

It's not just the cost of the cooler I bought an i7 980 with a cooler then a 5820k without. The packaging size and weight was rather greater with the former which would make it far more expensive for Intel to distribute.

I think I 20 od years of computing I have used a stock cooler on only a couple of occasions. Wouldn't even consider using one on an i7

My (personally owned) PC at work and my server in my basement both use intel stock coolers as I had them kicking about in drawers and built both PCs from spare parts.

The work machine is an i7 3770, and works fine on the stock cooler (no overclock). The server is an i5 4460, and is also fine.

Stock coolers were fine for workhorse PCs even if they didn't support overclocks.

I'll miss them myself, in 5 years I'll probably have none kicking around that will fit and will have to actually buy coolers.
