GeX, that machine wasn't a refurb but brand new from retail stock.

Yep, it was brand new stock; I had suspected as much based on what Feek had said earlier.

Refurbs used to come in a brown box but now it's a standard Apple box and labelled refurb. You've done really well there, good job. I think it's also far too early for the current model to appear on the refurb store.

Did a reinstall of the OS and it's back to normal for now.

The key thing is the battery health, ie how the current max charge compares to the design capacity. If it is less than 80% and you have done less than 1000 cycles then it is faulty.

Mine is saying 6886mAh max charge currently after only 372 cycles! So I’ll take mine in and see what they say.

Will be difficult for me to find time to take it in though as I use it for work almost constantly now

No joy with Apple they said if it was in warranty the might replace but as mine is OOW it would be £125 to replace battery.Any recommendations for a 3rd party battery ?

What did you do in the end?

Seems they're being quite inconsistent about this now, I just went in store and they told me it would be £199 if I wanted it done today, otherwise 'he had a deal for me' and I could wait until November and get it done for free.

The anti-reflective coating on my screen needs doing too, so they effectively need to replace the majority of the laptop. Screen and battery (which apparently includes keyboard and trackpad and other gubbins under there)

Was kind of hoping for a full replacement. Spoke to the guy and he cashed in on the two week period back in June when they were giving out upgraded laptops instead of repairs himself. He said there's a specific warning on their diagnosis tool now not to tell customer that they can get a new laptop.

That said, he was very nice and the fact that I can still get the battery and screen replaced for free is still a mighty good deal for a 5 year old laptop. The only problem is the battery replacement time is 14 days, which is it bit mad.

I can't afford to be without my laptop for that long, so I'm going to have to wait until I have some time off in about 6 weeks before I get the repairs done.

They offered a new battery for £125 which i declined. It still works fine on mains power so i'm just using like that.
I have been looking for a third party battery that i would fit myself but not found anything i would trust to last.

I think you got lucky GeX. My issue wasn't with a MacBook but an iPhone 5 when I went to see them. Long story short, the phone would cut off at 50% and after a diagnostics test it showed the battery had failed after 378 charge cycles which they acknowledged was well below the 1000 before it should lose capacity. I was still told it'd be £70 for a battery replacement (this was about last year), so that sucked.

Good result for you anyway.
