Was trying to see what carrot gold the olympic gold medal was and found this.

- The London 2012 Olympic medals weigh 375-400g, are 85mm in diameter and 7mm thick.
- The gold medal is made up of 92.5% silver and 1.34% gold, with the remainder copper (a minimum of 6g of gold).
- The silver medal is made up of 92.5% silver, with the remainder copper.
- The bronze medal is made up of 97.0% copper, 2.5% zinc and 0.5% tin.

gold medal has as much silver as the silver medal. surprised by that

Shouldnt matter as this is the pinnacle of all sports and therefore the athletes should get a pure gold medal....if i won a gold and read that later, id be pretty gutted lol.

So you've just beaten the best athletes in the world but you would be gutted because you've just found out your medal isn't pure gold? lol

Yes as I'd be wondering why they call it a gold medal when in reality it has more silver than gold in the medal itself.

I wonder if the gold medallists that have won, know that it really isn't a gold medal ie probably the outside of the medal is the gold part rather than being gold through and through.

How is this news to people? I thought everyone knew that gold medals were mostly silver?

The cost, weight, and the simple fact there isn't enough gold available force it.

I can just imagine your disappointed face around christmas when you discovered what was really inside those gold coins. As has already been mentioned. It really isn't all about the fact that it isn't pure gold but it's the achievement awarded that really counts.

Sounds like a typical ocuk reply "it's my right to have pure gold dammit"

They could just half the size and make then 10K Gold or something. The medals are ridiculously big compared the previous lot. BBC has an article which has the run-down of all the Olympics medals.
