My Fiesta (45k miles) has just finished a run from the Lake District to Suffolk, and upon turning it on yesterday I had a CEL appear on the dashboard. I have used a OBD2 scanner to find out what the code is, and it is showing as a P2187 System too lean at Idle. The car was only serviced and MOT'd a month and a half ago, so this is something that has come up since then.

I will obviously need to take this into the garage to get it fixed, but I am wondering if anyone can give any advice as to whether the car is still ok to be driven short distances to work this week, or whether I am likely to cause any/additional damage to the powertrain?

Probably a faulty sensor or a leak.

Check if any hoses have come detached. This was quite a common one on the ST due to clips sometimes being too loose :/

It's almost definitely a vacuum leak as the lean situation is occurring at idle. The way to check is to watch for high positive fuel trim numbers than improve when the revs are held up for a short period (using a scan tool)

Update:

Well took it into the garage today and they did two batteries of checks on it, having called Ford tech support to ensure that they have check everything they could and all they did in the end was clear the code from the ECU and then send me on my way (100 quid lighter I might add).

The old courtesy car (Ka) was a rather interesting drive I have to say, no power to say the least when driving it!

If it comes back I hope you get a £100 credit.

If you scanned it to to read the code why did you not clear it yourself and save £100?

What's the point in owning a scanner if you're going to take it to the dealer anytime it throws an error?

I presume the OP though the dealer was going to do a bit more than simply clear the codes and charge a stupid amount of money. Lesson learned; until you know otherwise just assume main dealers are lazy, incompetent and out to rip you off. Mostly you'll be correct.

I tried to clear the code using the scanner but it didn't seem to clear (possibly user error) so I believed it was a bigger problem than just a 'glitch'. Reading up on what it could have been online lead me to believe that as it wasn't clearing it would be a bigger issue which I definitely couldn't sort myself.

If anything like this happens again I will clear and see if it comes back, so far, touch wood, the EML hasn't come back on. But thanks for all the comments guys.
