New Year. New Hardware.

Just like each year, 2014 will give us some shiny new hardware. With rumours of DDR4 and USB 3.1 surfacing, many people are asking when is it best to upgrade?

I think we all understand that there is no 'best' time for upgrading, as new technology is released pretty much daily, but when do you predict is the best time to invest and upgrade.

I'm unsure how close/far we are to a big jump in technology, so I need ideas when it is best to drop the cash. I don't want to upgrade when we are close to the next generation of (for example) CPUs, because that would be a bit of a waste of money. Then again, I don't want to wait forever.

Tbh I don't think DDR4 will be used anywhere apart from very high end PC's and servers, since when has DDR3 been too slow? :D People will probably still be using DDR3 for a couple of years to come.

Yeah I think DDR4 is going to start off in the Enthusiast series of hardware to begin with :p

We need some more software to push our hardware firstly IMO :)

Best time to upgrade, when you have the money and if you think a particular component(s) of your system needs updating.

Hmm wish I could get my crystal ball out for this but mystic Meg wanted it back :p

I get that, but there are times which are better than others.

I am out of touch when the new tech is released, when the new CPUS, graphic cards etc. are first launched. People who are more attentive may chose a better time to upgrade.

You don't buy a PS3 a month before the PS4. You'd be better off holding out a month and getting it at half (bit of an exaggeration, but you get me) the price. Same for everything really.

Now's a great time. AMD and Nvidia have released their new GPUs and better (non reference) versions of AMDs are coming out in January. Intel released Haswell last year so there's nothing stopping you.

Graphics cars.... wait till around middle of the year? I made the mistake of buying a geforce 6 series 1 month before the 7 series came out... what a mistake that was!

there is no good or bad time to upgrade just upgrade when u want as new stuff is constantly getting released,
Last year just before Haswell was released and the new AMD GPUs would have been a pretty stupid time to buy. People often roll this line out but buying just before new technology is released isn't the best of ideas.

In what universe is the ps3 going to be reduced by half price after the ps4 is released?
Its been like a month now since the new consoles a have been released and there hasn't been any noticable reductions on the ps3.

There has been the same b.s on hukd where you get the constant 'no point in buying a ps3 now the ps4 is out', 'wait a little bit and the ps3 will be cheap as chips' or similar type posts in every single ps3 deal thread.

The ps4 isn't backwards compatible and with ps3 games still being released there isn't going to be ps3 huge price reductions for the foreseeable future, maybe a few quid here or there.

Pc wise now is a pretty good time to get a system. Cpu front nothing going to happen for a while and by the looks of it even when it does it won't be shockingly faster than Haswell anyway. New Gpus have just been released so will be quiet on that front for a while as well

Well there will be new non reference 290 and 290x being released over the coming months, not sure but maybe newer variants of the 780ti as well.

This is really what I have been waiting for :D

I'll probably go for early February, as it is when I finish my exams.
