My son has leased for the past 4 years and now wants to buy his own car.

He's seen a Golf GTD with 74000 miles on the clock, manual gearbox, full-service history and 5 previous owners for £10,500. My concern is that 5 owners appear to be a lot?? and is there anything he should look out for on this sort of mileage? He drives a decent distance of around 40 miles return to work so DPF issues don't concern me.

Large repair bills do !

Don’t think there are any major weaknesses really. Got a MK6 GT diesel myself. Had it from 42k and it’s just coming up to 100k. Biggest issue I’ve had was a top mount that needed replacing after driving over a speed bump (wasn’t going particularly fast)!

Mine only had one previous owner though, full VWSH. I always service on the nail and run on V-Power. Not had any DPF issues or similar, and I do a ~37mile round trip to work.

Check it’s had the cambelt and water pump done, it’s due at 5 years old. Think it’s about £400 at VW, you can have it done elsewhere for less though. Rate mine highly as an all arounder. Still on original clutch. 48/49 MPG measured at pump.

Edit- £549 for cambelt and water pump at VW now! I’d look to have it done elsewhere for that price.

check how the recorded, service and mileage intervals match with 70K & 5 owners, ie no clocking.
cloth seat squab+bolsters, and bonnet, look clean, pics don't show tyre make clearly.

It's not ideal. More owners = more variables as to previous treatment. Why did the previous owners get rid? That's what I'd be wondering.

The choice of car is sound, just not this one.

One owner and FSH is what you should be looking for, it’s not exactly a rare car - and don’t be afraid to travel if you spot a particularly good one.

Considering the way most GTDs seem to be driven, I can't imagine what sort of punishment 5 different people will have inflicted on it.

Commonly driven by people who would have much rather had a GTI or R but their company car plan forced a diesel.

Lots of owners isn't bad if the history is well documented, but you'll probably only find that on more exotic and classic stuff.

5 owners on a 5 year old a white goods car like a Golf = walk.
