2014: Your year in gaming

Just kinda angry all the time with broken games.

Stopped Planetside 2 because the devs break it with every update

Battlefield 4 was rubbish for most of the year

Elite Dangerous is **** and boring

Ubisoft just making my blood pressure rise even though I don't buy their games anyway.

I've gone back to what made me consistently happy when playing in my younger days, Quake 3.

Going to stop playing so many games and do something more productive like learn a language.

GOTY - Payday 2, picked it up for next to nothing but lured me in and bought all the DLC. Most played game this year.

Honorable mentions - Sleeping Dogs Definitive (never played the first) and The Crew

Bit of an up and down year for me gaming wise. I started the year off with a PS4 and finished it with a pc (for the first time in a good number of years).

Game of the year for me is a tough one as there are lots of games I have discovered this year that I wouldn't have bothered with previously. The one that has come as the biggest suprise is Euro Truck Simulator 2 as its suprisingly addictive and before I knew it I'd nailed 50 hours into it in just a couple of weeks. Usually I play fast paced FPS and racers but this one is such a chillout game and it really got me hooked.

Honorable mentions for:
Far Cry3 - never played it until I got my PC built, quite enjoy it despite its flaws
Borderlands Pre Sequel - looked forward to it and yes its good fun but lacks the replayability of the previous games for me but overall not bad.
Dishonored - again never played it until I built the pc and I quite like it so far
Skyrim - had it on PS3 but couldn't get into it. I dip into it every so often on the PC and I'm finding it OK despite preferring Fallout's setting/story
EVE online - graphically stunning and the little I have played I have enjoyed it but at the moment it doesn;t get the time it clearly needs as I'm too tired from work to really give it a go.

Flop of the year is a tough one but I'm going to go with Grid 2. I loved the first one, really got into it and enjoyed it a lot but this was just dire. A truly awful game that I couldnt get into in the slightest. Thankfully Grid Autosport is an improvement.

My game of the year would have to be Sniper Elite V3. To be honest, it wasn't even a particular good game...I just loved watching people's heads explode in slow motion.

...that makes me a bit sick, right? :(

Excellent:
Alien Isolation
South Park: Stick of Truth
Far Cry 4
Football Manager 2015

Good:
The Golf Club

Cities XL
Payday 2

Game of the Year - Dark Souls 2

It's a great entry to the series and I've put a good 65+ hours into it, which is good considering I can barely remember any other games I've played this year, which shows that I enjoy it enough to play it that much.

This brings me on to...

Disappointment of the Year - Dark Souls 2

I was so incredibly hyped for this. I'd played about 300+ hours in Dark Souls 1 and a further 150+ hours on Demon's Souls, and while I do really enjoy the game, it didn't meet my high, and possibly unrealistic, expectations. My biggest complaints with the game were the new combat mechanics, and how in an effort to increase difficulty they just threw more enemies at you instead of making a smaller number of enemies harder to beat through varied move sets and AI. The increased number of enemies, the insane tracking on some enemies attacks and the reduction in invincibility frames from the outset frustrated the hell out of me and I almost gave up playing. After getting used to the changes I still thoroughly enjoyed it, but it wasn't the game I'd hoped for.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to Bloodborne come next year!

Game of the Year - Alien: Isolation
Even if I wasn't a fan of the film, the actual game is amazing, so being a fan just increases this tenfold. Perfect atmosphere, design, graphics... Can't fault it enough. The dread that you feel at times I've never felt playing any other game, and I've played horror games and similar games like Outlast. I love collectibles as well and going around reading all the terminals and diaries was mega fun.

Honorable mention - Wolfenstein: The New Order
Thought I went off FPS games, but this brought me straight back in. Fun gameplay, great story, characters, voice acting. And no tacked on multiplayer, it paid off.

Disappointment of the year - Dead Rising 3 maybe. I couldn't really think of many. I finished it, but it could have been a better port and the game itself wasn't as good as previous ones.

2014: The year of buying too many games in Steam sales to be able to play any.

amen brotha

GOTY for me probably just Borderlands Presequel, based solely on the fact it's the only game I had time to complete this year!

Honourable mention = Dark Souls 2 - I seriously need to set aside some time to get this finished.

Need to buy Divinity still, hoping for 50% steam sale before 2nd Jan...

Disappointment of the year is definitely DESTINY for consoles, game was hyped up like crazy but failed to deliver on an epic scale. Very addictive still though, but story is non-existent and content is extremely limited.

Didn't actually buy / play any PC games which disappointed me this year, which is a good sign I guess.

p.s. at all those saying the MMO genre was crap this year - what about the WoW expansion..? Despite the rocky launch stability, isn't it supposed to be really good..? In a year when a WoW expansion is due out, the competition doesn't usually bother putting up much of a fight :p

Disappointment of the year - Civilization: Beyond earth.
Nothing but a re skinned, broken, soulless civ 5

I played FTL too this year - thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wildstar - A new style of MMO for me after eq2 + swtor - a lot faster, still playing it.... enjoying it.

Game of the Year: dark souls 2. Its the only game i have ever wanted to replay straight away in a long time! Twice!

Honourable mention= diablo 3 on ps4

Disappointment= too many rereleases or definitive editions

Thanks for all the contributions guys. It's really interesting to see what everyone's been playing this year.

And I was pleased to see Gauntlet appearing in more than just my list - a really good little game :)

I don't think I've bought a game released in 2014 other than The Crew which is decent enough fun. I've just spent most of the year sticking with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and DayZ. Also carried on where I left off with Far Cry 3, and now I'm most of the way through my GTA run through before GTA V comes out on PC.

GTA V is the only game I'm looking forward to. I've got it on PS3, but I just can't bring myself to play games on consoles any more. Once it is out on PC it'll be all I'll play for quite a while I think, but GTA V is not relevant to this thread.

Quietest year of gaming for me since the 80s, as my first child was born last year and I recently switched jobs to a 5hr commute, meaning very little time for it in 2014. In fact my position is very similar to the OP (10-15hrs of gaming a month average is probably not far off).

When ours were born it was probably the opposite. I couldnt be arsed going back to bed between feeds so just stopped up and played games. Must have put in an extra 8-10 hrs per day!

Highlight for me since last Christmas is probably being able to play BF4 with Ultra detail and more importantly, with keyboard and mouse, after 10 years of Xbox peasantry :P

2015 will be spent clearing this year's backlog of games acquired while drunk on the new sensation of PC game sale prices and bundles. At least until Fallout 4 turns up anyhow... (should it of course...)

Alien Isolation is a popular choice. I have to say it's an odd mix of infuriating yet decent for me (hid and crawled through med bay in late hours of last night)... Not sure it's quite the dog's nads but I will certainly persevere till the end!
