I was just reading this article about the potential apple product line up for this year. This is the bit about the Apple TV:

Apple TV (2015 Possible)

The existing Apple TV has not seen a significant update since March of 2012, which means it's long overdue for a refresh. 2013 rumors were torn between an upgraded box and a full blown television set, but in 2014, it became clear that the next-generation Apple TV is likely to be a revamped set-top box that incorporates features like game support, a full App Store, Siri, and some kind of reimagined television service.

Early 2014 rumors pointed towards a 2014 launch for the redesigned set-top box with a full App Store and support for games on the device, but the update never materialized. It's possible a new Apple TV has been held up by content deals, which Apple has struggled with for years now.

Apple initially imagined a television service that offered a la carte cable channels and cloud-based DVR functionality, but the company has reportedly had to scale back on its television ambitions due to uncooperative cable companies that are reluctant to change the status quo.

The most recent content-based Apple TV rumors from February of 2014 suggested Apple is now aiming to provide content from existing cable companies overlaid with an Apple TV-style interface, along with modest DVRing capabilities.

Apple TV rumors have died down significantly in recent months due to Apple's focus on the iPhone 6 and the Apple Watch, so it remains entirely unclear when we might see a new Apple TV product, aside from a vague "2015" prediction from The Information in July of 2014.

In May of 2014, iTunes chief Eddy Cue confirmed that Apple was still working on a way to improve television, but that a fix is "complicated."

What are the odds that it may be a full fat set top box and PVR?

So it could completely replace say a TiVo or SkyPlus box. It would still allow access to all the channels from your cable or satellite subscription, allow scheduled recording, program search, download program info from the net, character info etc. and PVR functionality, plus all the apps, games, VOD content all in one place.

That would be pretty ace.

I really hope they don't try and integrate anything into a TV, I'm sure they won't. I bought my first smart TV a few months ago and used the built in functionality for about 5 minutes before plugging in my TiVo and Amazon Fire TV and I've not used the built in functionality since. They needs to build a box that combines all the other boxes and services and plugs into a dumb screen.

No chance, certainly not this side of the pond. The most you'd probably see this side if something like that were to happen would probably be Freeview. I don't think Sky would give up their set top boxes and they already offer they're Now TV services on the Apple TV and various other devices.
The best we could hope for is all catchup services being available on the Apple TV.

Really? That's a bummer.

Hopefully Apple have enough clout perhaps they'll work out some kind of deal with them, like they have done with the banks for Apple Pay.

We still domt have iTunes radio, so no Apple tv won't be good here for a while

Yeah, I don't get that.

They have so much money, they're so huge, they have so much momentum, they're building this absolutely incredible campus in the states for a ludicrous amount of money, but they can't get iTunes radio to the UK?

They must be in desperate need of this expansion in terms of workforce, or they're slacking.

I can only imagine they can't expand fast enough in terms of quality personal to keep up with the demand than possible at the mo. Problem with having a finger in every pie spread across a large company with such a prominent brand to protect is certain things move a lot slower than younger companies like spotify and pandora

There's no way Sky would allow Apple to break their stranglehold on content and hardware.

Surely it depends on how much value it can add to the service?

What if Apple played Virgin, Sky and BT off of eachother to get an exclusive deal on the hardware? Especially if it could be a real game changer.

If they had to pay them it would come out of the users wallets, not sure their is many users willing to pay apple to use services they already use. Even if money was exchanged I doubt Sky would ever get onboard. Also not sure BT could ever offer something exclusively without a big uproar.

I personally think they should just focus on digital content and the future, Sky/Virgin and similar services all really need to die out in favour of on demand TV. Instead of getting the channels they should focus on getting the content, all the content. The biggest missing piece will be live TV and thats the main problem I feel most users have when trying too avoid using Sky.
