Evening all,

In typical last minute fashion I am working out a route for this years trip away on the bike.

The route thus far contains the following points of interest, largely dictated by the mate I am travelling with but also ones I have researched thrown in.

Depart St. Malo, France

Germany
Nurburging
Black Forest B500
The town of Vank (I can't spell it properly due to swear filter!) (his pick!)
Fussen (Neuschwanstein Castle)
Salzbergstraße, Eagles Nest

Austria
Großglockner Hochalpenstraße (National Park/Toll Road)
Gerlos strasse
Fern strasse

Switzerland
Berggasthaus Aescher-Wildkirchli
Klausenpasse
Susten/Grimsel/Furkapasse

Return to St. Malo, France

Would welcome any ideas for additional POIs/Roads/Passes. If time permits might add in the Great St Bernard Pass (Which Kreeee ribbed me about last year) down into Italy then back through the Mont Blanc Tunnel.

Don't go into Paris. For the southern (return?) leg of the journey, from Beaune head to Autun then Chateau-Chinon, Nevers, Bourges, then Orleans or Tours and Le Mans. If you go to Tours, stop off at Chenonceaux.

Would be return yes. Something like this:

Revised

Depending on how much time is made (or lost) I could even throw the D902 in for part of the Tour Des Alps in France.

How come you're doing the ferry to st malo rather that the ferry/tunnel to calais? You're doing a hell of a lot of motorway just to get across france and back!

Because I don't live on the mainland :p

Ahhh, yes that would be a good reason! :D

TBH if I had the choice of 300 miles of french motorway (even the non toll roads) vs 300 miles of british motorway, I'd be straight on the continent, the standard of motorway driving over there is soooooooooooo much better than the UK.

Watch out for the Belgium motorways, the ones I experienced were full of wheel bending potholes, they're not in the best condition.

Unless you're going at a very quiet time the B500 is over rated. Not sure what bike you're on, but the more minor roads off the B500 can be much more entertaining.

I can also recommend Staufen (south west of Freiburg) as a fabulous little chocolate box village to spend an evening in :)

The Technical museum at Speyer is amazing and well worth visiting - you can walk down the wing of a suspended 747 amongst many many other things. They also have a huge space/apollo exhibition - the biggest outside the US I think. The place is huge!

Loads of WW1 sites to see in Belgium, but if you're short on time I'd pick Ypres Menin Gate and Hill 62 / Sanctuary Wood. Ypres is also lovely to spend an evening,

I was on the B500 last year and I had it to myself. Literally saw 2 or 3 other cars and one log hauling lorry. I'm not fussed about seeing it again but friend wants to go so we shall!

Technical Museum is a good shout, I'll add it as a POI, it's on the route also.

OK, what's the most time/kms you want to spend in Switzerland?

You just pass a load of amazing roads, but to do them all adds a lot to your journey :p

You pass right through, but miss:

Grimsel
Susten (The best pass in Switzerland IMO)
Oberalp
San Gotardo

Also if you exit/enter Switzerland via the Matterhorn/Ticino instead you can do:

Simplon
Centovalli (google image this one!)
S. Bernardino (bit far though :p)

I plan to do Susten, Grimsel and Furka. Just when putting the loop into the route planning it went totally crazy and couldn't handle it!

I'll check out the others.

When are you doing this?

I might be free to join for the Grimsel/Furka/Susten loop if you want a billy no-mates to tag along for a bit :p

We are away Aug 27th to Sep 4th. I imagine we will his the Swiss part towards the mid/mid-end of that time span. Day 6 or 7 perhaps.
