2021 Australian Open

Plus 200 points for the ATP rankings, though. Over 12,000 now. Not bad.

Who knows what's in his head, maybe he wants to rest and those were mostly tactical losses.

Fine.

Novak Djokovic confirms he will skip Paris Masters, admitting: ‘I am mentally exhausted’
Djokovic confirms he'll skip Paris Masters, saying: 'I'm mentally exhausted' (tennishead.net)

"Djokovic opted to play Vienna to get the two wins he needed to secure the year-end world number one spot, but as soon as that was done he slumped to a dismal 6-2, 6-1 defeat to Sonego.

It was his first ever loss to a lucky loser and the worst defeat statistically of his entire career, yet afterwards he was completely remorseless.

“Yes, clinching the [year-end] number one had an effect on me today,” Djokovic said.

“I’ve done what I came here for, securing the number one. And I move completely fine with today’s result.
Straka, however, did not take kindly to the comments, even if he did stop short of accusing the world number one of tanking.

“I find such statements unnecessary,” Straka told Der Standard following Djokovic’s defeat.
“Even if you would think so, you don’t say that in any press conference.”"

Medvedev won it, while Djokovic and Nadal didn't make it to the final.

Hints and signs about the change of the generations but still I don't think anyone of the younger players is as talented as the World number 1 or even the 2.
I don't even see positive press about future talents, someone 18-19-year-old who can become great one-day.

Somehow I think the lower half of the men's draw is easier.

The upper half has Djokovic, Thiem, Zverev, Raonic, Dimitrov, had Wawrinka and Cilic...

I think Djokovic is the greatest tennis player of all time but what he tries to do with making his opponents appear more equal than they actually are may cause troubles for him.
At some moment, it's possible that he could lose motivation, he is a showman, though.

Game, set and match Djokovic :p

308 weeks world number 1.
2 more weeks at this position number 1 and will be ahead of Federer's 310 weeks.

Medvedev has a chance to go up to world number 2 ahead of Nadal if he wins the tournament.
Tsitsipas to world number 5 ahead of Federer if he wins his match against Medvedev.

Thiem is down to world number 4 now.

He will be kicking himself if he doesn't surpass Fed/Nad in grand slams because of the US open incident

I think it doesn't matter, really, plus or minus 1 is not important and also we can't be sure that he would have won it regardless of that incident.
2020 was the worst year, Wimbledon got cancelled - that was a much bigger loss for the whole tennis world.

Djokovic has other records to pursue - higher number of week number 1s, for example.

"He is currently ranked as world No. 1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Djokovic has been No. 1 for 308 weeks, and has finished as year-end No. 1 on six occasions, an Open Era record shared with Pete Sampras. Djokovic has won 17 Grand Slam men's singles titles, including a record eight Australian Open titles. He is the only player to win all of the elite tournaments on the modern ATP Tour – that is, all four Grand Slam tournaments, all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, and the ATP Finals. In particular, he is also the only player to complete the career Golden Masters, which he has done twice. Overall, he has won 81 ATP singles titles, including a record eight Australian Open titles and a record 36 Masters events.

Djokovic began his professional career around the time Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal established themselves as the two dominant players in men's tennis. At age 20, he interrupted their streak of 11 consecutive majors to win his first Grand Slam singles title at the 2008 Australian Open. By 2010, Djokovic also separated himself from the rest of men's tennis to join Federer and Nadal in the Big Three, the group of players who have dominated men's tennis through the end of the next decade.[a] In 2011, Djokovic was ranked No. 1 for the first time, winning three out of four majors and his first five Masters events of the year. He remained the best player in men's tennis for the rest of the decade, leading the tour in major and Masters titles, and winning four out of his five titles at the ATP Finals consecutively from 2012 through 2015. After four consecutive year-end finishes at No. 3 through 2010, Djokovic finished No. 1 six times and No. 2 three times in the next ten years.

Djokovic had another career year in 2015, reaching fifteen consecutive finals, including all four major finals and eight Masters finals, winning three majors and six Masters events as well as the ATP Finals. The following year, he won the 2016 French Open to complete the career Grand Slam. He also became the first male player since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four major titles at once and the only male player in history to do so on three different surfaces. After long trailing both Federer and Nadal in their head-to-head records, Djokovic has since taken the lead against them. Representing Serbia, Djokovic has led the Serbia Davis Cup team to their first title in 2010, and also led Serbia to a title at the inaugural ATP Cup in 2020. He won a bronze medal in singles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics."
