We don't do many single journeys over fifty miles. We will have an EV charge point in our new property. I am not 100% sold on electric vehicles. We just need a cheapish reliable reasonably comfortable four door runabout, new or nearly new.

Recommendations?

For my "station car" I bagged myself a 1.2 VW Polo. Sure it's a toy but it's very cheap tax (1.50 a month IIRC), ULEZ and I only have to fill it up twice a year. It's got parking sensors and everything. It's got 5 doors :-)

I am sure there must be a Skoda or other equivalent that is cheaper but basically identical.

Used BMW i3, not sure they have 4 doors though, but can be had for 15k, EV with like 60-80 mile range.
Otherwise small city car like a Skoda, VW, Seat, Citigo, Up, Mii etc.

Decent enough, my brother and his girlfriend have one and haven’t had any issues.
What about a VW Up! GTI? Fiat Panda 100HP?

We are looking at all options. My wife who is not very tall likes her fiat 500 which is now becoming unreliable, I am 5' 10" and liked my Honda Civic, now sold. We are both retired and need a car to take a suitcase and another bag, to go on jaunts etc. Occasional four seater for daughter and partner. Most city cars fall down on space and comfort although I am not looking for big saloon levels of either. The Hyundai seemed to be a sensible choice in most aspects dependant on trim level.
Also would probably buy nearly new.
