Hi everyone,

I’m currently in the process of planning a new build for 2025, as my ageing i7-8700K and GTX 1080 Ti are nearing retirement. I’ve put together a potential build and was hoping to get some advice on its compatibility and whether you think the components I’ve chosen are the best fit. Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Intel:

Fractal Design Torrent Nano Black Windowed Mini-ITX PC Case
Gigabyte Z890I AORUS ULTRA DDR5 PCIe 5.0 mITX Motherboard
Intel 24 Core Ultra 9 285K Desktop CPU/Processor
Noctua NH-U12S Chromax black Slim Premium Quiet CPU Air Cooler
Corsair DOMINATOR Platinum RGB Black 64GB 6000MHz DDR5 Memory Kit
XFX Mercury AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT OC Magnetic Air Edition 16GB Graphics Card
Corsair SF Series (2024) 850 Watt Fully Modular 80 PLUS Platinum PCIe 5.1 SFX PSU/Power Supply
ASUS ROG Swift PG32UCDM 32" 4K UHD 240Hz G-SYNC Compatible HDR10 QD-OLED Gaming Monitor

AMD:

Fractal Design Torrent Nano Black Windowed Mini-ITX PC Case
ASUS ROG STRIX X870-I GAMING WiFi AM5 DDR5 PCIe 5.0 mini-ITX Motherboard
AMD Ryzen 9 9950X
Noctua NH-U12S Chromax black Slim Premium Quiet CPU Air Cooler
Corsair DOMINATOR Platinum RGB Black 64GB 6000MHz DDR5 Memory Kit
XFX Mercury AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT OC Magnetic Air Edition 16GB Graphics Card
Corsair SF Series (2024) 850 Watt Fully Modular 80 PLUS Platinum PCIe 5.1 SFX PSU/Power Supply
ASUS ROG Swift PG32UCDM 32" 4K UHD 240Hz G-SYNC Compatible HDR10 QD-OLED Gaming Monitor

This time, I’ve opted for an mITX configuration, as my current Corsair 750 Airflow is simply too large for my needs. I should add that some parts, such as storage, will be lifted from my old machine hence why it's not included in the above list.

As always, I truly appreciate any help or advice you can provide.

The parts are already listed, I updated it to a list as soon as I realised that the forum didn't allow links to competitors.

You might need to refresh your page.

Yep.

Can only see CPU , motherboard and cooler on intel. Build AMD build CPU and cooler thers just lots of numbers.

I've updated the orginal post so that it now shows the full names of the parts rather than the item codes. In case you can't see it though, I'll include them below:

What do you actually use the PC for and what is your budget?

It's impossible to properly advise unless we know your exact use case.

If your pc is mainly gaming then the 98000x3d is one of the best gaming CPUs and should be on your list. There is the 9950x3d which ideal for gaming and productivity work like video editing if that's a consideration.

Memory you ideally want 6000mhz C30 for AM5.

You've choose quality parts which are premium price you probably could save money looking at alternatives.

Is gaming your main use ?

4k 240hz takes a lot of GPU power.

I think my budget will be around £3500 as I'm wanting to buy (I realise this is a daft thing to say in the computer world) a system that will future proof for the next 4-5 years.

In terms of use cases, predominantly gaming, although I do work on some audio production, light coding and converting FLAC and MKV files.

Then the x3d CPUs is the way to go.

I doubt you'll get any future proofing for gaming from buying a 285K or 9950X/9950X3D.

Gaming only needs 8 fast cores and the evidence of the past (i.e. i9/Ryzen 9), is that the extra cores don't help you, because the newer CPUs are much faster per core and gaming can't make good enough use of the extra cores to compensate for the speed loss.

They may help you with your productivity, but for light usage, it still isn't worth the expense and added heat/power in your small case.

I'd consider a MATX option instead, like Lian Li's A3, since you pay a premium for ITX. Alternatively, there are more compact cases, like Lian Li's 207.

Corsair SF Series (2024) 850 Watt Fully Modular 80 PLUS Platinum PCIe 5.1 SFX PSU/Power Supply
Afaik, the Torrent Nano places the PSU in the top and supports large PSUs (without restrictions elsewhere), so SFX is not required.

XFX Mercury AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT OC Magnetic Air Edition 16GB Graphics Card
Unless I'm missing something, that won't fit.
