Another generic 'which is best bang for buck gpu upgrade' thread. Apologies in advance!

My 2070 Super started screaming at me a few years ago. Been changing the thermal paste on it until it gave up the ghost and here we are. I don't really have a budget, and will go up to a 4080S. I'm looking for a decent long term investment, Ideally around 5 years that's a good bang for the buck. I won't really want to upgrade again until the next gen of consoles are released. I'm not one for upgrading regularly. The 2070S served me well from 2020 to now. So whilst i'd go 4080S if it just made the most sense for what I'm looking for in the price/performance/future proofing department, if there's something cheaper that works, I'm interested.

I game at 1400p Ultrawide (Alienware AW3423DWF) - The 2070S was holding up well here in a lot of titles suprisingly.
5800X3D - Maybe this was doing a lot of the leg work.
650W PSU.

Would a 4080S require a new PSU (750/850w?) and is it worth the 1k over say a 4070S, in terms of somewhat future proofing?
Titles I'd be looking at are mainly things like Diablo 4/PoE 2 at high framerates. Monster Hunter: Wilds, though I know it's recommened specs are a bit out there, that an important release for me. I've been holding out on playing Cyberpunk for the longest time due to wanting to run it at a nice steady 70fps+ on ultrawide for a while. Not overly concerned about raytracing, great if the game can handle it and maintain frames, but fps and high graphics is most important for me.

Hope that's enough info! Thanks for any advice :)

Thanks for your suggestions guys, been super useful so far.

With regards to DLSS, I've tried my best to get on with it in games and I just can't see past the slight blur. I like a nice crisp image for some annoying reason, and I'm not not cluded in as to whether DLSS has improved a ton since what the 2070 Super was offering, but it always really bugged me to the point I never had it on. I've never turned raytracing on in anything, obviously I've never really had the card to see its potential without massive hits to performance and so never genuienly considered it. I wonder if I want to go down the route of needing it just yet

That Powercolor 7900XT does look like a very good price! I'm only apprehensive about going from green to red, for no other reason other than 'will I regret it'. I haven't had an AMD card since maybe 2011 (think it was a 7850 or something like that) and my last 2 cards have been an MSI 970 and Gigabyte 2070 Super. Geforce Experience has never given me any issues, not even sure what the AMD equivilent is!

I know the PSU question is a little up in the air as Tetras mentioned, but would you guys recommened getting a decent 850w to go alongside it?

Current PSU is a Corsair TX650M. Would probably been looking at a new PSU just for peace of mind if anything. I'd probably selling my Xbox Series X to CEX for like £250 too, seeing as I've literally haven't turned it on in over a year as I only play my PS5/Switch for consoles.

His money and he wants one now, 5000-series could be 6 months away for all we know.
Yeah, its tricky.

I will say, I was quite happy with the 2070 Super before it died. It did the job. I wasn't in the market for a card, I was going to see how Monster Hunter Wilds performed and go from there if need be. I'm sorta thrown into an awkward position.
I'm not super technical or obsessed over percentages. I've had this account since 2008 and only have 226 posts !

I just want to plug it in, install the drivers and go 'ooo this is much faster!'. If I'm right in thinking, I'm going to get that experience with the £630 7900XT when comparing it to a 2070S?
I could wait for the 50XX series, but then after waiting I'm going to be dropping £1100-1200 on a 5080 right? Are we thinking my 5800X3D is going to be fine and not bottleneck those cards? Then I start going down the bit by bit upgrades and before you know it, I have a new PC I didn't really want haha!

I think the only thing I'll regret is if I spend £600 now on a 7900XT, and then before the end of February there's a £700-800 card that blows it out the water (Again, not sure how likely that is). Anything that releases and is 1K+ I wouldn't really be comparing, as in my head they're completely different purchases.

Wish this card had made it to February xD

After thinking about it all week, I finally went with the 4080 Super TUF, Corsair RM1000X, and upgraded to 32gb ram for cheap.

Thanks for everyone’s advice! It was very helpful. Initially I made this post stating I was only really interested in raster performance, but after a TON of research, I think that was mainly cause my 2070 Super was never really up to the task of some Nvidia features, or outright didn’t have access to the 40 series perks. I’m excited to try them! FG looks like something that’s going to be fun to test. And if I can get some raytracing while staying above 60fps in some titles, that’s going to be nice. I bought an 34 inch 1440p OLED ultrawide about a year ago, but don’t think I’ve seen the best of it yet.

The main drawback was the price, obviously. I ruled out the 4070 Super cause of the 12gb. And then when looking into 4070TI Supers, it wasn’t a huge jump to 4080 S.

The 5080 being right around the corner came into the decision a lot. But, I really don’t know what I’d be getting myself into. Price and availability is unknown. I wouldn’t want a founders edition. I don’t think I want to wait another 4 months with no gpu just to have the stress of launch day uncertainty! I’ll watch from the sidelines this time, and consider a 5080 (24gb??) Super if it isn’t just essentially a price cut again.

Anyway my adhd has gone on a ramble. Thank you everyone! No idea what real-world difference to expect in my jump from a 2070 Super. But excited either way!
