208 Temps Issue!

I think this 208 1.4 petrol has a faulty temperature sensor.

Was driving and the temp shot up instantly to max. Stop light came on.

I let it cool down for 20 mins but then when ignition turned on it instantly went to max temp (rather than a gradual warm up).

Pretty sure that's a faulty temp sensor?

Oh and it was in for a service on Thursday. Not happy that it cost me £295 for a 20K / 2 year service. Even less happy now that this has happened.

What's the odds that someone left a wire a bit loose, which has fallen off in the past 2 days?

Given the 208 has only been around since very late 2011 I would assume your car is still in warranty and its 2 year service was its first 2 year service? If so I would just take it back and expect them to sort it out, benefit of having a new/ish car :)

Turns out it's quite a common fault with the 208s and I believe there was a recall notice for the GTi version: there was a bad batch of temp sensors.

It's a strange fault because you instantly see the stop / overtemp notice and pull in. You expect to see steam or smell the effects of heat but the temps and coolant level were fine.

The fan was going like hell though - like a 300mm Delta :D - and what's really scary is that it keeps going at max level even when you take the key out of the ignition.

If anyone else experiences this exact situation then it is safe to drive home or to the garage but beware the fan will stay on for ~ half hour after turn off so you may find the battery gets flat.

What do you think of the car generally?

I'm looking for a replacement and the 208 looks nice, from the outside.

Yes it's perfectly fine. Good fuel economy, not too sluggish unless full load (1.4 Allure, 5 door).

Inside is a bit plasticy but I think most new cars are now like that.

Yes, just a fault that happened 5 miles after the service. Murphy's law for them I guess.

I took it in today and the sensor was changed. They did it under warranty but the cost would have been £67.

It clearly is a common fault so anyone buying a 208 may want to check the sensor has been swapped out else it may go sometime.

Looks like this is faulty again - but at the different end of the scale this time.

Temperature gauge does not move off zero when driving. In stationary traffic it moves about 5mm upscale to 60'.

OK, it is winter and wind chill affects the reading when in motion but at stationary it should be higher than 60' right? Should be 90' ?

Depends whether the car had a "true" temp gauge or not, but even of socit should be more like 75+

Could still be the sensor or could be a thermostat issue, I'd be more inclined to say its the same issue as before but you never know

If it's thermostat, when you're stationary for prolonged periods of time the temperature will rise to normal. Since it's risen a bit, sounds like you've not been stationary long enough.
Thermostat fail open = too much cooling power so engine never gets hot unless no airflow through the radiator.

Took it in to the garage. They reckon there is nothing wrong with it.

Diagnostics check out ok, the temperature "rose to 70'". Said I didn't give it enough time to warm up.

Doesn't sound right.

1. Took it for a blast down the motorway. I appreciate that will take hell of a lot of windchill and thus cool the engine but it never moved off 60' (zero). When I came off the motorway and waited at the roundabout for about 30 seconds it did move slightly to 65.

2. Driven it around town, sat in in for 10 mins. It only varies between 60-65.

3. The heater never gets hot. I turn the temps up to 28 / Hi and after 10 minutes it's about as warm as Kylie Minogue's breath after she's had a Mojito with ice. If you keep your fingers over the vents they should burn right? They don't.

If only my 4770K run as cool.
