Folks I've purchased a 2080 since I currently have a 1070 and I just purchased a 120hz AOC 35" affair so I can match the refresh rate with the 2080.

Ive been reading some comments people are saying I should have gone for a 1080ti but they're not much different in price albeit higher ram .

So have i made the wrong choice?
 
Difficult one.

On one hand the 1080 Ti has the memory advantage, on the other hand it's likely given Nvidia's track record, that future drivers will be focused on the newer tech and Pascal will become the new ginger stepchild, just like the 7 and 8 series are now.
 
When there was a huge price difference between them the 2080 didn't make sense at all. Performance wise it is swings and roundabouts - there are some things the 1080ti is faster at and some things the 2080 is and so on.

Honestly though I think paying the kind of prices they are going for for 1080ti performance this long on is nuts :( unfortunately there isn't any real choice though if you want to move from a 1070 it is either that or the 2080ti.

Not the wrong choice, both cards have their pro’s and cons...but equally both cards are similar in performance- if I were you I’d just enjoy what you have
 
Look how much better the 1070 is doing now compared to the 980ti. The 2080 isn’t much better than the 1080ti now but for future proofing it’s a much safer bet.
 
Cheers folks, I got the Inno3D for £659.99.
However a competitor is offering the 1080TI Zotac Minigraphics card 11GB for £559.
Would this be any different in performance to a normal 1080TI considering the"mini" aspect?
Would the 2080 be more "efficient" and uses less fan speed compared to the 1080TI considering its new architecture?
 
Just enjoy it. The 2080 has far more potential and 1080 Ti definitely not at these prices (ie£700+). People said same last gen too initially. It's that Ti snobbery :p
What you have is a GPU that normally is about the same performance in older games but has RT capabilities and if DLSS gets put to good use could be 20%+ faster. Uses less power too apparently (if that matters but running cost is part of the cost). When DX12 done probably it should be faster in those games too I think

Damn, cheers Darren, bit of a scary cat and cancelled my order, but Im actually going to place it again and just say thats it.
 
Don't buy based on DLSS or RT features because they won't be widely used. At least not for a couple of generations yet.

DLSS needs developers to send off their source code to Nvidia, most will say **** that.

With the prices you are looking at 2080 is the right choice at this performance level. I got my 1080ti FTW back in august when the prices were quite a bit different - although the 2080 ftw is still around 840 which is insane considering the difference between the two.

That's an opinion rather than fact :).
RT is already in one game and nice I'm using it, not even switching it off to gain more performance either.
They don't have to send their source code to NV either it was just suggested during a presentation along the lines of "Hey, send us your source code and we'll even do it for you". It was more of a joke I reckon. I work in IT and get to see source code from other companies all the time too. It's no biggy. Right now I could snag a whole load of complex scientific code. Contracts are put in place and there'#s the trust etc. Someone could offer me £100k to get them a copy of the code and I wouldn't do it, and that;s just me, just a single person. Company to company entirely different ball game. NV are not even in the industry of writing games. Any code NV put in place would be reviewed of course too.

But can we really call it "performance boost" though? When effective the performance gain is from lowering the resolution and then rely on upscaling and AA to make it close to the higher res? (unless I am mistaken with how DLSS works?)

DLSS rendering at a lower resolution, and upscale to the higher resolution along with use AA by using AI learning. It may have the potential to have the best image quality in the context of upscaling, but it's still not going to look at good as native 4K resolution I think?

But putting RT and DLSS aside, I agree with people mentioned above about from long term driver performance point of view, the 2080 would make more sense than the 1080ti. The sad thing is though the 1070 came in at a lower price point than the 980ti, whereas the 2080 came in at a higher price point than the 1080ti.
 
If you have a GTX1070 I would just hold onto what you have. I would wait for a 7NM card at this point,as I would be very surprised if the current 12NM Turing is a long lived design.

One game, where it's implementation was sponsored by Nvidia. Even then it's not great. Some things look better with it OFF due to horrible artifacting (e.g. moving water). It adds a few extra reflections for a massive performance cost.

It needs about another 5 years of development before it's worth considering.

I don't get horrible artefacting :). I;'ve seen the video examining RT but not noticed any of that stuff myself. I'm too busy gaming not looking for issues. Big patch coming too soon to start sorting out issues and performance gains being worked on. It's a very early implementation and tacked into the game too. Still pretty decent IMO.
If just one game comes out that OP buys that gets a 35% performance boost from DLSS, it's worth it from that angle too :). So, it's a GPU as good as the old Ti but with potential. If buying to last a few years and expecting to play new games it's the GPU out of the two to have, and even more so at the current old Ti prices here at least.
This gen is a bit of a switchover gen between old tech and some great new tech. For sure, if people can wait then next gen, whenever that will be, it will be even better and an easier decision to make.

When the 2080 launched and the 1080ti was selling at reduced prices I would have said the 1080ti was a better deal but not a better card, with the prices being similar I think you're fine to have gone with the 2080, its a really good card, wish it was cheaper :P

But I do think that its not worth hanging your hopes on RT and DLSS, as cool as the tech is, right now there are zero uses for DLSS and 1 fairly meh use of RT (looks very pretty, runs kind of poop) In the future these may be great, but in the future you may be able to get RT capable cards for a lot less money, so yeah.
