Hi guys

My friend has i5 8400 cpu and is thinking of getting a 2080ti will this cpu bottleneck the gpu?

What minimum cpu would be recommended for a card like this?

Thanks

Most likely however it depends on the resolution used.

Having only 6c/6t and not being overclockable will take its toll, 2080Ti is still a very fast card.

IMO a 10600k/10700k. Or 5600x/5800x Ryzen.

What GPU does he have now? Sure it will likely be a bottleneck but he will still likely see an improvement in average FPS but may see more lows as the card is waiting for information.

Bottleneck is a hugely misused term. There will always be something in a PC that is limiting the performance. This is as much dependent on the game as it is on the PC. In general replacing either the CPU or the GPU will improve performance, and replacing the GPU usually results in a higher gain that replacing the CPU. I don't think there is any such thing as a complete waste of money, but of course if you have an old PC then the gains might be less than you would hope. In recent years though we have seen graphics cards reaching a point were there is such a thing as "too powerful". This is largely down to the games people are playing and the monitors they are using. The 2080ti is a seriously powerful card and way over the top for most people. So first thing he should be worried about is whether it will actually give him the performance gain he is expecting in the games he plays, given the monitor he uses.

Sure he will see an improvement in FPS and obviously be able to enable Ray Tracing in games that support it too. It should be noted though, a 3070 beats a 2080ti nearly all the time.

Depends really the 2080Ti still has more vram, with rtx/dlss enabled the 3070 struggles with only 8gb. Also both overclocked the 2080Ti wins in pretty much every game vs the 3070.

However i wouldnt pay any more than a 3070 for a 2080Ti though.
