Thinking of picking up a 2080ti for a friend's son but he only has a 550w PSU ( super flower) it's a fairly modest system with a 3600 CPU.

Am I asking for trouble or should it be ok?
Thanks
Scott

Nvidia said 650w min but that usually allows for poor quality PSUs. Iirc super flower are decent, but presumably it's a bit old and they degrade over time, I think on balance it's iffy.

It might be reasonable to try it, but if you encounter issues then buy a psu, but that might not be a great use of money overall.

What GPU does he have now? Perhaps we can come up with a suggestion that doesn't need a new PSU. What games / resolution / refresh rate?

Significantly worse performer, but I'd consider a 6600, since it uses around ~130 watts, or a 4060 for the same reason (though don't pay £300 for one).

The PSU in my brother's PC is in that range and my 2080 Ti is working fine in it.

If it's a good quality 550w PSU it should run fine.
However you will be significantly reducing the lifespan of the PSU because the transient spikes will be placing greater stresses on the capacitors
