Ok, based on price, it's arguable it's even worth buying right now (probably not) but now hearing how many FE's are failing and even one guys 2080ti literally catching on fire, are these things even worth buying?

Are the 2080's as risky as the 2080ti's? I'm building a new machine, for gaming, and I would buy a 1080ti, however they are harder to find than the 2080 and in most cases even more expensive.

Atm all 3 are as risky. 2070, 2080, 2080Ti.

I have an idea, and its pretty radical....

Why don't you go and use your favorite search engine, and look at some reviews of the cards you mentioned ?

That way you can make an informed decision, all by yourself ;)
 
If you can afford it, get the 2080ti without any hesitation. If it fails you can return it otherwise there is always the warranty to fall back on. If every minor niggle scares you, you would never end up buying anything. I don’t think the return rate is high otherwise nvidia would have recalled their cards by now. They don’t want to be the new Note 7.

You and been offered advice, and been handed links to follow to research the cards yourself, yet you still ask the same question in a manner that suggests that the it's other peoples responsibility to work out which card is best...

Given the help already offered, why don't you do some work and and come to a decision based on that?

You actually remind me of cluendo who is asking almost exactly the same thing as you. He even makes the same typo with astrix instead of Asus Strix.:D
 
If you are a developer or have some other professional use, yes these cards are worth it. Otherwise, huge waste of money. We don't even know what feature level of support the 20 series cards have for the first iteration of DXR or the longevity of this iteration of DXR.
