20GB HDD enough - 360

Thanks. Do you have to install the game or is it an option? Also how big is the average install and I take it loading times take a bit longer if you don't install them?

Installing games is an option. It makes the console MUCH quieter when in use as the DVD drive stops spinning and make it load a bit quicker. Definitely worth doing if it's a game you play often.

The average install is between 4-6Gb.

Yes that'll work, all installing does is copies the entire disc to the hard-drive.

If you can get a 60GB HDD though, it'd be worth it.

Thanks a lot everyone :). I'm being as cheap as possible (Only getting the console cause it's cheap :p) and I'll only be playing one or two games at a time so space shouldn't be an issue in regards to installing games.

You should be OK for one game at a time, its the 4GB Xbox that you'd have to worry.

If you are getting an older white style Xbox be wary of it having issues like red ring of death, and hope you trust who you're buying off!

Elite would have a 120GB HD not 20GB. However, the 20GB HD actually gives you only 13GB available to use for your own stuff - the rest is reserved for the system. Still sufficient if you just install one or two games at a time though.

Got an elite off a mate witha faulty dvd put a new drive in and got a 120gb off ebay does the job nicely :)

Ended up buying a black 120GB HDD that I'm presuming came with a new Elite anyway. Only cost £22 which about a tenner less that what the average 120GB drive was going for. Considering I was going to pay about £10 for a 20GB drive and 60GB drives seem to go for about £20 I think I did well in the end :p.

Cheers for the responses. Oh, and nft, what DVD drive did your elite come with? That's what's wrong with the one I bought but I'm having to wait until it arrives to actually know what laser I need to buy.

Unfortunately it varies. Elites came with either Hitachi 79s, BenQs or LiteOn drives. BenQ and LiteOn use the same lasers though and they're a lot more common than the Hitachis but as you say, you'll need to wait until you get the thing before you can know for sure.

the elite i got had a benq drive, found a supplier online did replacement drives with new laser fitted not to be to swap over after watching a few utube vids :)
