20Mb VM BB and older routers

So my area finally got upgraded to 20Mb, however my trusty ZyXEL 334 can only go at 10Mb/s with Firewall enabled and at 20Mb/s with it off. I am guessing the CPU in the router isn't up to the job? Although I can run it without the firewall enabled I guess this isn't the best thing to do. I had flashed the firmwear in a hope it may work but it doesn't.

Anyone recommend a new router or a work round? May as well get a WiFi router although I have no WiFi devices, yet?

I'm happy with my Speedtouch 585v6 which is an adsl2 capbale router with WiFi. It should work ok for your need.

Saying that most new routers will probably be ok for you, but I find the Speedtouch to be very easy to use and it didn't cost much to purchase.

I got one of these when I discovered that my old router wasn't up to the 20Mbit task.

Best router I have ever owned and definitely worth the money.

DSL router or Broadband as well?

I got this problem with my router, any idea what its MAX through put is?

It would only work OK if the OP's looking for a chocolate fireguard - an ADSL router is useless on cable.

The WRT54GL is a "cable/DSL" router, i.e. it doesn't have a modem, which is what you want for cable. It shouldn't have a problem doing 20Mbps either.

Yep, I'm running 3 wired PCs with wireless turned off on VM 20Mb.

i have the befsr81 router and looking at specs it can only cope with 10mb on the wan ,are you getting good speeds with this router I.E close to 20mb or like me you haveing trouble with vm 20mb service at the mo thanks

Make sure you buy with a view to further speed increases in the future.

I got a new router sent for free from VM website just had to plug it in and ring them up and was sorted within mins

hmmm you mean you got a new cable modem as i did, but im talking about routers here ,they sent me the 255 modem version which so far is no good my surfboad was better
