20Mb VM upgrade!

I just got this set up today, started off really great, reaching a near 2.0MB/s on newsgroups!
So i started downloading a file around 4gb in size to find that my connection is actually slower than it was at 10mb! Due to these new caps being imposed a 4gb file can take an hour to 2 hours longer to get!

Virgin media suck, i don't consider myself a heavy user i rarely even download, i go weeks without downloading anything major. I just expect my connection to be there when i need it.

Ive been with Blueyonder since the very start (cableinet), and now i wouldn't recommend them to anyone due to this.

Surly i cant be the only one that is considering ditching VM.

My 20Mb service seems fine so far (only had it a couple of days). Getting around 17Mbs off usenet with 20 connections, obviously you'll need multiple connections when downloading anything to get near to full speed but I can't explain why downloading the same thing should take longer than it did before the upgrade

I know that...

Its slower due to the fact you get capped as soon as your over 3Gb, the speed slows from 2MB/s to 600KB/sec. Thats why its slower...

The way it is with these imposed caps you only get 20Mb/s for 20 to 30 mins of constant downloading after that you will hit your 3GB download mark and then your screwed

Its totally annoyed me, i pay more and get less?

I don't want to have to leave my PC on over night to download something i wanted to check out yesterday, and have to pay the more on my electricity bill for the sake of it.

Id rather download while im surfing/gaming.

What UBR are you on Trox?

glen2 here with no issues.
ubr02.glen.

I don't get it, why increase the speed to 20Mb and have restrictions every 3GB, it would be far better with 10Mb and uncapped than this garbage

I've been a fan boy of cable since they came to my area late 90s, VM have totally screwed it up.

I dont see the point in them upping the bandwidth to 20Mb/s and adding this cap.

3GB download is nothing, i dont class myself as a heavy downloader as ive said above.

Think about it... 20Mb connection, within 15 mins of downloading your capped to around 5Mb ? Awesome.

Pay more get less!

Until contention ratios drop to single digits, you're still going to hit this problem. You could spin it the other way and consider that 10MB users got a free upgrade to 20MB...

10Mb users got upgraded to 20Mb and made to pay an extra £2, and they also got screwed as downloading from 4 pm to midnight your connection is slowed to 5Mb.

Why should i have to leave my PC on all day while im at work or sleeping?

You can still download a shed-load, they just don't want you doing it between 4pm and midnight, so do it at other times. What's so hard to understand, or are people so selfish that they not only want to download a huge amount but they just have to do it between 4pm and midnight?

It's the equivalent of the London congestion charge.

My point is, people get a fast broadband connection to watch/listen/play something straight away, we don't want to have to wait.

Waiting is old hat, i want the file now, not tomorrow. (so to speak)

-----

15 mins of 20mb connection is a joke. All it does is make Virgin Media's adverts look better.
Saying that if they advertised saying that they offer 20Mb for 15 mins ever 4 hours i doubt it'll look good ;)

We're not talking odd files here, we're talking 3GB of downloads during peak hours!

If you just want a few files then there's no problem, this is designed to impact people download large amounts during peak hours.

What legitimate material is it that you wish to download during peak hours that will put you over the 3GB limit on a regular basis!?

How many times do i have to say this?

Im not a heavy user, i want my connection there when i need it! I dont want to have to wait until tomorrow

Why should i suffer? It should be the people that are downloading constantly if anything

It's 21 minutes, assuming full 20Mb speeds.

What exactly do you need to download so often that is over 3GB?

OK will you read this one, ill try word it slightly different.

Im not a heavy down loader, but now and then maybe once every 2 or 3 or 4 weeks i might download a big file... Why should i have to suffer due to other people abusing ?
I should be able to download it when i want surly?

Im downloading Games (Beta testing, not illegal), i don't know why you need to know what im getting though to be honest.

----
Anyway, ill write to the head office and tell them exactly how i feel, do the usual threaten to leave, they then will contact me and reduce my payments or add some more tv channels or even both.

Dampen the blow ;)

Why are people who actually make use of their connection selfish?

I download 0.5 to 2GB a day on VM XL.

How's this.. User X has VM "Large" broadband (4MB), he downloads a single demo from Xbox Live and gets gimped for having the audacity to download 750MB. That filthy, selfish abuser! Then there's the case of multiple people sharing the same home connection..

good point :), the caps are too low. They need to revise this system, and make it affect the real bandwidth hogger s and not the casual downloader

So you only need to download a big file every 2 weeks or more yet, when you do, you need it that very second and overnight just won't do?

Heres me thinking faster connections means less wait times for files.

Ever ordered something online and you wanted it straight away? Dont you just hate waiting for delivery and then you find out City link didnt bother turning up?

Sorry, Im not getting on at you, this isnt your fault, but you have to understand that these caps should be placed on the real abusers.

The only point I'll concede in this is perhaps the limits should be averaged over a longer period, so rather than 3GB during peak hours each day, it's 21GB during peak hours in each week (and similarly for the tiers). This would alleviate the problems of those who only occasionally want a very big file but still penalise those who insist on downloading large amounts every single day.

Yep, id go with something like that, people abusing it should suffer not the person that only downloads every so often.
( I would even accept less that 21GB in the week, i would never reach 21GB hehe )

We can agree here :D

This thread has helped me vent out my frustration ;)

omg you can only download 350mb then capped?

I'm doing a letter tomorrow for their head office, imo everyone should.

These caps need to be revised.
