I'm wanting to start a new hobby recently, the guitar really appeals to me but I'm worried now that I'm 21 I'm a bit to old to learn a new instrument. Would this be the case?

I would certainly have professional guitar lessons, what's your guys opinion on this?

What is best to start out on, acoustic or electric?

Cheers

Can't think of a witty reply, so to answer your question directly - no, of course 21 is not too old to learn guitar.

Never too old!

If you want to learn Electric I highly recommend you get a guitar and Rocksmith on the PC (don't buy it on steam as you won't get the required USB cable).

No need for fancy equipment as the software does all the pedal and amp settings.

So much fun, I haven't play my guitar this much for years and I am getting better via the software rather than just playing the same old stuff.

Sure get real lessons also but rocksmith is well worth it for 40 quid!

Edit:
Just seen you want to learn acoustic :(

Ideally I wanted to learn acoustic guitar though not electric

How much are you looking to spend?

It might be a little tougher initially to start out on an acoustic, as they tend to use heavier strings and have a higher action (distance between the strings and fretboard), but this can really help with building finger strength early on which is beneficial.

Should be absolutely fine on a 6 string, the action wont mattet for picking up chords really -an older 12 can be much more of a challenge right enough.

Get yourself a guitar and either someone you know to show you some real basics or a couple of lessons, progress to a couple of basic songs that you like then get yourself a band to practise with - this is when you'll learn the most.

Does anyone have any suggestions on which guitar to start out with and where to get lessons in Stoke on trent?

We have a great shop in Hanley called Academy Of Sound that will sort out a guitar for you and fix you up with lessons.

oh and the ex guitarist in local rock covers band Disturbin The Peace didn't start playing until he was 42.

Thanks, I'll take a look.

Any idea how much I should expect to pay for a decent beginner acoustic guitar?

Cheers

Whatever you can afford tbh, a couple of hundred would be plenty for a first guitar (especially as you're just learning), equally i'm sure you can find something usable for 50 quid

As has been said, you're never too old.

Not quite a guitar, but one of my uncles learned to play the piano in his 60's.

£200, give or take. You can spend too much at this stage, and you can definitely spend too little. Something low end from a decent brand - someone mentioned a Yamaha below - should see you right.

22 quid with the cable is crazy value!

Let me know if you have any input lag issues as there are a few things you can do.

Enjoy it!

Tried at 30 to learn guitar, got the guitar, amp and everything but best i could do was learn a few chords and a few riffs thats about it oh and happy birthday song. All the technical stuff and some of the hard to do chords where u just cant put ur fingers where they should is where i was giving up.

So atm its not being used. Might try again at some point but it takes too much work to learn i thought.

Just my story of learning, bit of a downer tho sorry. But if you are keen and can learn it better than i could then go for it and best of luck.
