Hi,

Long time lurker first time poster! I'm looking for some help choosing a screen for an upgrade.

I currently have a 19" pretty standard affair 1280x1024 screen. I'm looking at 22" partly because I feel 1680x1050 won't tax my 5850 too much and again because you can only get that resolution in a 22" monitor.

Can anyone suggest something for me? I'm seeing less and less that are not 1920 resolution and so am rather stuck with which to get

Thanks guys

Hi,

Thanks for the reply - Do you find the 5850 is capable of playing games at 1920x1080? I guess I could look at crossfire -but I'd imagine my cpu is more of a bottle neck than the graphics card?

I'd love 24" instead, purely for the essay writing and other bits and pieces, but I worry it'll make gameplay impossible!

Thanks again for your help.

there is not not much diffrence between the two res's

1680x1050= 1.76mp
1920x1080= 2.00mp

and with your card it shouldn't be a problem plus you'll have a better resale value with a 1080 screen and also you'll find in some games like mass effect it will letter box it on movie parts and also when you watch movies it will strech and distort with it not being 1080

Any suggestions on a 24" screen guys? I'm lost when it comes to monitors these days. Long gone are the days of look for a decent refresh rate and a flat tube!

What is your system spec?

Also, I purchased my monitor just before LED became the norm and better tech to get. Your usual brands such as Samsung, LG, BenQ etc will all produce decent screens which will be great for gaming, just check for a fast response time and ensure refresh rate is at least 60Hz at full res which is what most will be some may get to 75Hz.

Going from 1680x1050 to 1920x1080 you lose less performance than you'd think as an example when benchmarking Mafia 2 for a test (simulated GTX460 performance with maxed out settings) it dropped from 53fps at 1680x to 49fps at 1920x.

My system isnt that great currently -

Core 2 E6400 @ 3.6ghz
6gb ram
5850 graphics card

I was looking at the 120hz samsung screen, perhaps this is worth the premium for the extra response or am I just barking up the wrong tree?

Only downside to the Samsung 2233rz - 120Hz and ATI can be problematic... generally it works ok sometimes with a little fiddling but some people never get it working quite right.

Otherwise I would quite highly reccomend the 2233rz.

I wish I never got the ATI, something about nvidia and just working. Though I was tempted by the 460's in sli!

The BenQ G2420HDBL 24" is in at the moment with all the forum members everyone seems to be recommending them. I'm planning to move up to dual screen and 1920x1080 from 1 screen @ 1680x1050 if I do go ahead I plan to get these monitor's due to all the forum members recommending them so they must be pretty good.

Hey mate,

You intending on switching to these screens also? I just want a bigger one for having different documents/sources open at the same time - to make things easier on the eyes!

Yeh mate, had this 22" ViewSonic for around 2 years now. It's still fine nothing wrong with it but fancy an upgrade to be able to game at 1920x1080 with my newly bought GTX460 1gb also never had dual setup before so thinking of doing that also. Upgrading in all sectors lol.

Resolution 1680x1050 -> 1920x1080
Screen Size 22" -> 24"
Dual Monitors

i still havnt made up my mind yet but if i do go ahead i think i would choose these Benq's becouse they have very good reviews and everyone on forum recommends em so they cant be bad :P

Going by the reviews if you choose the BenQ i dont think you'll be disappointed

I did have a quick search last night for a good review of the Benq but didn't come up with very much! I take it most of the monitors would be an upgrade to my Syncmaster 920n? :)
