22" monitor for dual screen set up recommendations

Hi,

I currently have a 24" Dell monitor which I am very happy with but given the time that I use my PC and what I use it for I really want a 2nd monitor for things like web browsing, email, and programming (probably most important one).

I will not be playing games in a multi screen setup so the obvious concerns re that aspect aren't important. To be honest it doesn't need to be great given the type of use it will endure but can I make up my mind, can I heck!!

As I see it I have two options. Option 1 get a monitor with height adjustable stand that can be rotated to portrait mode and option 2 get a bog standard screen and get a VESA desk clamp stand thingy (you know the ones I mean). BenQ G2220HD gets decent if unspectacular reviews, but given the price of around £90 + say £50 for a dual monitor desktop stand its appealing.

Anyone have any recommendations from a similar predicament? Money isn't the biggest issue, I've been seriously tempted just to get a good 23" or 24" monitor with height adjustment but then I consider what it is going to be used for and think its a waste of money. Replacing the Dell I currently have as the main monitor means still having to purchase a stand as it's not height adjustable! Catch 22!

Any thoughts? Oh I have a GTX 560ti GPU so connections, video performance shouldnt be an issue, not that it really would be with any half decent video card I know but just in case someone asks "what vide card do you have :)"

Cheers

Hi there,

Personally I wouldn't recommend a TN panel monitor (like the BenQ) for a portrait monitor since TN panels have poor viewing angles and in particular very poor vertical viewing angles. If you put a monitor on its side then the vertical viewing angles become the horizontal viewing angles - so with a TN in this position there is only a small horizontal angle which you can see the image properly - which isn't ideal if this is your second monitor.

Therefore, I would strongly recommend you get an IPS or VA panel monitor if you plan to rotate it.

The LG IPS235V is a good option, as it costs ~£140 and is VESA mountable.

If you want a monitor that has a good standand which is height adjustable and rotates to portrait, then the IPS panel Dell U2212HM and U2312HM are well worth considering.

Some good thoughts there and I think I agree given your points. THe LG gets some good reviews but given that a stand would be required on top of the purchase price I think I may just opt for the more expeisve dell models as they can be rotated coupled with the fact that whilst my Dell monitor doesnt get glowing reviews all over I really like it and it has served me well for a few years now.

U2312HM looks like the one for me. For the sake of a few quid more I think I would rather stump up for it and hopefully be pleased with it for a while yet given my experience with my current Dell. Plus its not like it's silly money and I do use my PC a lot so factoring in the comfort of my ever detoriorating eyes is well worth taking into account.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

Yea, going for a dell is overall a simpler solution.

The U2312HM from what I have seen has got some really good reviews (here and here are some really in-depth ones from very reputable sites). Also, they have received a lot of positive feedback from users on these forums. So overall I'm pretty sure you will be happy with it.
