22" or 24" for gaming?

Hey all,

I was going to get a 24" for my new rig (Will be used mainly for surfing the net and gaming), however my mate has a 22" monitor and says it is ample enough...

What are your thoughts?

ay i agree with ya mate :D (just cos i have a 22") the extra 2 inches could trade off valuable frames depending on ya spec, and well im writting this on a 22" and i think this screen is huge enough for now ;) its even bigger than the tv i did have in my room (only just) so that tv is pointless now :p hehehe

so main point of this presentation... 22" *** :D
 
24" 24" 24" 24" !

I just changed from a 17" to a 24" and I say the bigger the better :D (but of course I'm biased). A decent enough rig will be fine for gaming at 1920x1200 resolution.
 
Deffo 24". Like previous post said, a decent system will play games at 1900x1200 with ease - excluding Crysis :)

If you can afford it then more is better. If you ever watch films or TV on it then 24" really helps there. Especially if you're considering HD content downloads or even internal Blu Ray drives when they drop more in price.
Gaming at the higher res with it taking up more of your view is also fantastic. What games do you play, plan to play?

Either will be very nice though, you'll be happy with both sizes
 
you wont trade of frame rates anyway - I have a 24" monitor but, depending on the game i play at 1680*1060 or 1440*900 with Driver scaling off for a perfect picture. you lose some screen space but because its 24inch to begin with you get the same as a 22incher anyway. if you have a 24 inch with 1:1 pixel mapping then you dont even need to use the driver.

Can you explain the driver scaling thing you're referring to

basically means that whatever screen size you have you can get crisp images in any resolution - just means that you have a black border around the edge of the screen - of course with a large screen the windowed size closely resembles the size of a monitor with equivalent native resolution.

if your monitor doesnt support 1:1 pixel mapping (which means this feture is automatic with your monitor plus means any device on that monitor with scale correctly) then the driver can do it for windows programs on your PC. works automatically in games too so you can have the desktop at 1920*1200 and ingame res set to whatever.

i.e windowed size of 1680*1050 on my 24 inch OcUK value is 21.5 inches accross.

needless to say you get the frame rate of 1680*1050 too.


support for this feature does depend on your drivers but with your card you are better off than me.

Thanks superficial. I've got 1:1 on my Dell so have used that when playing Crysis, just didn't know about the driver way of doing it
 
24". you can get away with using less AA at a higher resolution. in all honestly, using something like an 8800gt or the new ati's, there isnt much of a performance drop. and it looks so much better. (ex 22" owner)
