I'm in the market for a new screen I'm still using a hansol 700fs, I dunno what the specs are on it but I bet they aren't good, its ages old. anyway I play some games like cod4 and I'm starting to get into photography and photoshopping work but I haven't got a huge budget,
I was looking at a Acer X222W seemed nice but found it was TN panel, so I'm now looking at the ocuk 24", I know there have been problems with them in the past but what are they like now, and I really don't want dead pixels.
I'm also looking at the Dell TrueColour E248WFP which looks nice,
another problem I might have is my graphics card, I'm fine with not gaming until I get a new pc but will a 6800 run a 24" screen at 1920 x 1200?

help please

cheers

so my gfx card will do support the screens max resolution?
any advice on which one to get? dell or ocuk value, after reading the last couple of pages of the 24" thread I'm leaning towards the dell

but I really dont want a dodgy one with 4 dead pixels or something that will really annoy me, is there a picture of colour comparisons between a TN and a PVA?

I'm really stuck on which one to go for,
I've read good and bad things about both but the quality of the screen is a bit dubious on the ocuk one but if you get a good one its a bargain not sure its a risk I want to take

If you’re on a tight budget I would stick to a 22", for the money you would get a better quality panel. Going from a 17" to a 22" monitor will be a massive upgrade regardless.

It will be but then the Ocuk 24" beast is but over 200 quid..

If you can id always advise the 24" cos once u got it its done and dusted..... anyone thats gone from 22" to 24" always appreciate the extra 2" inches it just sorta fills that empty slot.

yeah I don't think I'd be quite happy with a 22" knowing i could have had a 24"

Model Name Hansol H700FS
Display Type Super TFT Amphorous Active Matrix
Panel Diagonal Size 17" (423,70 mm)
Panel Viewable Size 270,3 mm *337,9 mm
Pixel Pitch 0,264 mm * 0,264 mm
Native Pixel Format 1024 * 768
Brightness 250 cd/m² Typ.
Contrast Ratio 350:1 Typ.
Viewing Angle 55° up, 60° down, 70° left, 70° right
Response Time 35 ms (typical)
Horizontal Frequency ?? - ?? kHz
Vertical Frequency 60 - 75 Hz
Pixel Frequency ?? MHz (max)
Available Resolutions 1280 * 1024 (Optimal)

thats the specs of my current monitor, and at first look that contrast ratio is horrendous so I should see an improvement going to the dell?

The real crux of this argument I think is do you want the superior colour reproduction and vastly better viewing angles of of the PVA panel on the OcUK display (for a real bargain price at that I might add) or just another TN Film display, which all have pretty bad viewing angles and inferior colour reproduction. That OcUK dislay is supposed to be pretty darn good and to be honest, nothing else is going to touch it for the money.

As already mentioned the Dell E248WFP uses a TN Film panel, if you want the really good Dell, the one everyone talks about, with a PVA Panel, that's the 2408WFP coming in at a little over £400, although I would have thought you could find a 2407WFP (the older model) for a lot less money now, still, if it's new (never unboxed) it isn't going to be as cheap as that OcUK display still.

So really, there isn't anything that is going to touch the OcUK display in the 24" bracket at that price, all 22" displays use TN Films panels (as far as I know), if you want real quality but can't aford the Dell 2408 and you don't wan't the OcUK display then you'll have to look at 20" models rather than 24" I think. Although if you want the very best in the 20" bracket then that's going to cost you more than the 24" OcUK display aswell, the good old NEC MultiSync LCD20WGX2, which quite frankly is generally regarded as THE best in terms of image quality in any size bracket, this side of some seriously expensive pro graphic artist aimed displays.

From what you have said though, I think the OcUK model would be fine for you, either that or try and pick up a bragain on a Dell 2407WFP somewhere perhaps.

thanks moeks I'm fine with buying an ocuk value product but I'm just unsure about the chances of getting a crap one, If i did buy the dell I should still see an improvement over my current one ?

you'd see an improvement in response times and lighting, but viewing angles would appear worse as it's a larger screen which tends to amplify the problems (unless you are sitting dead centre)

Yea the cheaper Dell would show a great improvement over your old Hansol display in terms of response time. contrast and general picture quality I should think. I doubt the viewing angles would be too different though, indeed the larger display size would probably mean you would notice the inherent flaws in the TN panels viewing angles more if anything.

I haven't read all of that big long thread about the OcUK display, I take it there are some 'issues' with it that have you worried then? ...I do know that there was a load with TN panels that went out but I also know from what I have read that OcUK fixed that for those that got them and made sure that all future displays were of the VA varienty. I don't honestly know of anything else, but as I say I haven't read all of that thread, maybe I'm missing something.

I think I'm going to go for the ocuk one, if I get one with 3 or 4 pixels do I have a chance of resurrecting them ?

Not always but in reality if its that bad and they wont return it as faulty then you have the DSR 7day return thingy to send it packing, it may cost you the return fee but better that than a monitor you are not happy with :)

the what dsr thingy?
when I worked in the shop people returned things in packaging as unwanted if thats what your on about,
I'll be buying it in person cuz I live like 4 miles away, + I'll see if I can get them to get me a good one :p

cheers

Distance Selling Regulations, IIRC, its where you can buy something online, mailorder etc and are able to return it within 7 days from the day after you take delivery of it. Doesnt apply to collection in person though as you are able to inspect it onsite. Its basically so you get a chance to see what you've bought as you couldnt do that when buying online :)
