I have been looking at monitors for last few days and its a bit of a mine field.

Obviously the benq2420HDBL is in contention but have been looking at the Samsungs in similar price bracket.

Would going for a 22" at same sort of price mean im getting slightly better quality? Or is the difference going to be marginal?

Most all seem to be the same really with some crazy contrast ratios!

Samsung B2230H
Iiyama ProLite E2210HDS

Samsung P2450H
Samsung B2430L

and to mix it up, slightly higher price but the Dell ST2410 looks quite nice! I understand Dell make very good monitors?

Yes - Samsung and Dell both make some excellent panels, but the price is often slightly higher than similar BenQ panels. You may notice a slight difference in image quality (I am quite particular about these things and at the risk of upsetting people I won't go into too much detail). I have tried out B2230L (similar to the 'H' but no HDMI) and would say that for the price it's a very good choice. Colours were nice and vibrant, contrast was decent, it was responsive and importantly didn't have any problems with significant dithering and suchlike. The B2430L is most likely fairly similar, but I'd stay clear of the P2450 unless you like fiddling around with settings a lot and don't need to plug in any external devices such as games consoles.

you can get some hp monitors for quite cheap around 130 my dad paid for 23" one. its pretty big as well and good picture resoulition

To be honest, nowadays unless you're an expert in need of professional display for graphic design you'll find it hard to tell the difference in quality between most of the monitors. Nearly all of the new stuff has a decent quality and you can buy a very good monitor very cheap.

You probably won't be able to tell the difference between the 22" samsung and the 24" samsung unless it's a professional model vs normal one but then, even the SMALLER professional one will be around 2x more expensive than the bigger normal : ).

I'd buy a 24" if you have the space on desk for it and money to afford it.
Quality difference isn't a case here, it's whether or not you can fit it and/or have the extra money.
