Hi,

I have an old Samsung SyncMaster 2032BW, and Id like to pension it off for use with my second computer, and upgrade to a better monitor.

I've read that IPS and S-IPS technology offers superior image quality over TN technology, therefore I was considering an IPS monitor. (From those with experience here, is the difference really that noticeable ? I use my monitor for gaming and watching films)

My budget is around £500.

One monitor I was considering was this one: Dell UltraSharp U2410

and also this one: HP ZR24w

Thanks for all help.

For that money (£500) I'd be getting 3 x Benq LED 24" and put the remainder towards an eyefinity capable graphics card.

Or...as you're into gaming, get a 120Hz capable monitor.

If you want an excellent quality monitor the Dell U2410 is the one to get, imo. However, it is a lot of money, and if you don't mind having a TN panel then it probably isn't the best buy. As KelticDaz has said, you could get three Benq TN 24" monitors for the price of the U2410. Also, be aware that TN panels are generally better for gaming as they tend to have the best reponse times. With IPS panels it's riskier; you could could get a great panel that suits your gaming needs, or you could get a panel with poor response time, and lag. IPS panels of course have the best viewing angles and have the best colour reproduction.

This Wikipedia article should give you an idea of the differences between TN and IPS panels.

Someone linked to this video the other day. It gives you a good impression of the viewing angle differences between an IPS panel and a TN panel.

KelricDaz and Icg thanks for the replies, especially the video and wikipedia link.

The question of what is sufficient for gaming and films is I feel most important.

I'm not sure if the risk of input lag (I believe an issue with some IPS monitors), is worth it over a 120hz TN panel. I'd think this might depends on what kind of gaming you are into. Fast FPS might suffer more than RTS games. Myself, I play MMORGP's and some FPS games.

Does the issue of input lag detract when watching a film? I don't know.

I found this interesting article about the HP ZR24W, which is a very new release. The section about Responsiveness and Gaming shows, according to their tests, that the Samsung SM2233RZ, a 120hz TN panel, offers the best performance relative to the others tested. But I guess it's a balance between performance demands and image quality.
