Hi all,

My friggin' 24-70L has broken, right when I was in the the middle of an event at the weekend.

The zoom ring moves fine, but it doesn't cause the lens to actually zoom in or out, if that makes sense. Everything else is fine.

I contacted these people - http://www.fixationuk.com/Fixation/Repairs.html
They said it will cost between £65-95 + VAT + Parts, which seems really expensive.

I've also emailed these guys - http://www.hlehmann.co.uk/5.html

The lens was bought 2nd hand, so I don't know whether I can go through Canon. I've been on their support site but it is useless.

Has anyone else had any experience with having a broken lens fixed, and if so can you offer any advice?

Thanks

Fixation are usually pretty good and get things turned around pretty fast. (I've had two minor repairs with them, and sensor cleaned, always done a good job for me)

Or as you say contact canon and see what they can sort out for you. Are you a member of the CPS? You might qualify (I can't remember since the requirments changed). If so they repair things and depending on your level loan out kit etc. etc.

Might be worth looking into....

there is no reason you cant call canon and get a quote even if you bought it second hand

there is a main canon centre near me, ill get the number for you

I do have insurance, but I stupidly have a £250 excess. I am such a tight fist!!

Ok, so I called Canon. No warranty as it was bought second hand. It will cost £102 to fix it, which includes parts, labour, 6 month warranty, and post back. I might just go with that as I much prefer being told an all in cost, rather than "£65 to look at it and then parts on top"....because that could turn into hundreds and hundreds of pounds.

I'm confused now. One of the companies I should send it to (according to the Canon website) is H. Lehmann Limited.

I just called them and they quoted £162 to just look at it as it is their standard service charge.

So, what the hell happens? Canon quote me £102, but if I did send it to their recommended supplier, they'll charge me £162.

why do you have to send it to one of their recommended repairers ?

if you can go with the canon quote, i would do that.

They told me to get the address from the website. Turns out I just have to send it to the one listed as Canon (UK) RCC, as they are actually Canon :)

Panic over. Will send tomorrow.

Pain in the arse though. My 5D2 fund now is in minus figures.

Annoying!

I've been umming and ahhring about going second hand for my 24-70L when I buy it, but now this is the 2nd one of these I've seen break in 2 weeks I'm definately going for a new one from Kerso. Especially as it's going to get massively abused in it's first year :p

Mine was new from kerso lol, 10 months old.

Though it didn't technically break, just dirty contacts inside. They cleaned it and its perfect now.

Indeed, buying new is no guarantee if it not ever breaking but at the same time it's peace of mind that comes in the form of a warranty card! :D lol

Hopefully buying mine in a couple of weeks :)

Can you buy it before the 28th and lend it to me in case mine isn't back by then please?

I'll give you a bag of Skittles as payment.

28th of August? or September?

I won't have the money till the start of September mate :( - Otherwise I would have, no problems :)

Tell them you need it for work and they need to hurry up with it! :)

When calling the same Canon centre you did Nick they quoted me £102 for a repair if its a canon fault, however if they suspect its a end user fault caused by damage by yourself (which I doubt it is) then they charge £60 an hour + parts + VAT on top.

Also when I emailed all the different repair centres every single one of them gave me a different quote!

canon will repair it .. obviously as mentioned at a cost

the other place that appear resonable price its not a netbook with a 60-80 screeen its a top end lens ,, what would you consider a fair price all the work is actually in the dismantling and appraising the damage....

cps will only repair if you bought it new and registered it i have had s/h done by them but it was difficult and only at a cost.

Interesting!

When it was working one minute, and the next it was broken. It was just sitting in my bag so I'd be a bit gutted if they said it was my fault :(

I really don't need this right now!!

I think the price you were quoted is their basic rate anyway. I'm sure if i checked the topic i made for the cider incident on my 450D i was quoted around the £102 price as well.
