With every account you get a months free trial anyways - have you tried getting a gold membership on either your account or your brothers?
If youve already used it, make a new account and try xbox live from there.

Just create a new account and select xbox live silver, and it'll tell you that you're eligible for a months free gold and automatically add it to your account.
