I currently have a Dell U2412M (1920 x 1200) which has served me very well, and although there's nothing wrong with it I'm quite interested in making the move to a 27" 1440p monitor. I only have a small desk so multi monitor is not an option, and I'd like to increase the screen real estate instead.

Although I am an avid gamer I don't play competitively and the monitor will also be used for work. There's no way I could go back to a TN panel now for any reason. I have my eye on the Asus PB278QR as the one that would seem to fulfil my needs and is a currently on a great deal at OCUK.

What I am unsure of is if the benefit of going from 1200p @ 24" to 1440p @ 27" is a worthwhile one for the money? Anyone made a similar move and have any comments?

Thanks Niko, my mistake I actually meant the PB278QR listed here:

Sadly looks like the price has just changed, a little annoying as when I checked TWO at around 11am the deals were listed as 18th - 25th Feb and this monitor was still listed.

Edit: Called the shop and as I only just missed the deal, OCUK agreed to honour the price - what great service :)

In my opinion the PLS panels make the best 27 inch 1440p monitors, others may tell you different, just my experience.

I owned the Asus PB278Q and a couple of Samsungs (my current monitor included) and they all use PLS panels (effectively it's Samsung's "take" on IPS) but I prefer them for contrast and colour reproduction.

I went from a dell 2407-hc to the ROG Swift so in terms of size and resolution it's exactly the jump you are talking off. I still use the 2407 as a second monitor and yes it is absolutely worth it. The 1440p resolution is a much bigger jump than the size comparison and it makes everything much sharper.

Well the Asus and Samsung both use the same panel (manufactured by Samsung). In regards to the monitors themselves both are/were very very good but the Asus was very well built and just looked like a premium monitor.

The Samsung I have now is the S27D850 which can be picked up for £320 whereas the Asus is nearer £400 last time I checked.

Is the Asus worth £80 extra? I would say possibly not (but not by much). If you went down either route you'd be happy.

All I would say in fairness is I have heard some people talking of backlight bleed, glow and/or dead pixels with the Samsung although my unit is flawless.
On the other hand I have only heard good things about the Asus.

Thanks GMac just what I was after, given the same panel it was your experience on the implementation/build of each one I was interested in.

I'd also seen a few more negative comments on the Samsung floating around which swayed me to the Asus. However, I can see that for those who did receive a flawless Samsung it's supposed to be just as good.

I can't comment on the Asus, but the Dell U2715H is pretty much the same price

I went from a 24" to the Dell U2713HM last year and it was a great change, I love it - and the U2715H seems like it's a better monitor :)

With your GTX980, you shouldn't have to worry too much about frame rate impact from the increased resolution.

Thanks Steviepunk. The Dell was also on my final shortlist as my U2412M has been excellent. In the end OCUK honouring the TWO price for the Asus swung me to that, and that's what I've gone for.

I am still working on setting it up just right, there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of calibration info out there for the new revision of the monitor.

I'm stuck between the U2715H and the Asus 27 1440p at the moment, with the PB287Q popping it's head up every now and then...

I've got a 780Ti at the moment and no plans to upgrade the GPU just yet so I'm thinking 1440p over 4K.

My head tells me the Asus 1440p is the one to go for, but I can't get over the Dell's aestethics, warranty and heritage as being the high res screen to go for. Dah.

Rather than 1400p maybe you should go for a screen that's 1600 keeping the same 16:10 aspect ratio of your current screen.

That's what I did. The bonus is overclockers tend to offer good deals on 16:10 with the rise of ultrawide screens.
Personally I went for a Hazro IPS and have been in love with it ever since.

There's no doubt the Dell is tempting Randal.

Although I slightly prefer 16:10, I am sick and tired of games that don't properly support the resolution. 16:9 at 1440p seems to be a decent compromise in that the loss of vertical aspect is offset by the greater pixel density.

I went from a U2412M (which I still have downstairs) to a Samsung S27B970D and the difference in terms of picture quality and crispness is huge. It made the U2412M look like a TN panel lol.

Now that I have the monitor set up correctly I am really pleased with it. I can't say that it makes the Dell look like a TN panel, I'd say the colour saturation and contrast is very close. The only negative is that it does suffer from glow whereas the Dell didn't, but given the massive increase in resolution and physical size that's a small trade off.
