24" IPS Monitors in 2011?

I've not checked about the EA231WMi but they had provided it to me direct in the past. i'm pretty sure I'll be able to get one from them or from another source :)

I should have the EA232WMi very soon, just waiting for them to arrive in the UK :) Not looked into the Fujitsu yet but might well check them out :)

I will certainly make comparisons when we do the EA232WMi review and i might even try and get the EA231WMi to do at the same time side by side if you're lucky :)
Very nice Baddass, I'll be looking forward to the reviews (and weep if they do end up being better than my U2311H) :)

I'd be interested in upgrading from my Dell 2209WA to a proper HD or > HD res monitor. Do the other IPS screens suffer from the 'glow' effect you get at certain angles in dark images on the 2209WA? I read somewhere that the more expensive IPS panels have a polarisation filter to stop that.

I have seen it to varying extents even on very high-end monitors from Eizo and NEC. It may have been reduced or "changed" but it seems you can always see it if you look for it. Some models have an "A-TW" or Advanced True White polariser that reduces the silver glow. Often it appears as a different colour instead that is generally less noticeable than silver. Contrast was never really an IPS panel's strong point.

I think the last (or at least one of the last) IPS monitor to have a A-TW polarizer, on the consumer level, was the NEC LCD2690WUXi. LG have stopped manufacturing panels with A-TW polarizers so I doubt you'll see any others in the future, at least at an affordable price.

This effectively means any current or future IPS monitor you'll buy will more than likely have IPS glow. I believe there are vary extents of glow, depending on the type of IPS panel. A lot of people have complained about the orange/purple glow that the Dell U2311H exhibits, which uses a e-IPS panel. However, the Dell 2209wa also has an e-IPS panel but has silvery white glow, as does the U2410 (H-IPS). Very old S-IPS panels also had the orange/purple glow.

White glow seems to be less noticeable or distracting as the orange/purple glow.

It's annoying that TN panels have colour shift, VA have gamma shift/black crush and IPS has glow. I really can't wait until OLED monitors saturate the market.

Yeah, it's a shame about the glow - I love the viewing angles and colour reproduction, but the glow is a bit annoying. I've had to push my monitor back a bit, as it's more noticable if you're close to it.

It's only really noticable in dark games like Amnesia or Thief, but those are my favourites :(

FlatpanelsHD have just reviewed the NEC EA232WMi.

It seems like it's slightly worse than it's predecessor, the EA231WMi, in pretty much all departments except for power consumption. They measured a power consumption of 22.9W on the EA232WMi vs 30.4W on the EA231WMi after calibration.

Not all that impressive then, also their unit had backlight bleed too. There was all that talk about how LED backlighting was meant to reduce or eliminate bleed, clearly this was marketing BS or people got their facts wrong.

We should be reviewing the NEC EA232WMi next week in the usual style (with some extra bits chucked in as discussed above). I haven't used the EA231WMi for more than a couple of minutes so I can't really draw a comparison. But I've used many NEC monitors and have not yet had a problem with excess backlight bleedthrough. This could be a disappointing first in that respect.

Given that you've used/reviewed the U2211H, that's probably similar enough to the EA231WMi to give a decent comparison.

It might even be worth it to take some side by side photos of the EW2420 and the EA232WMi to give some real world perspective on black levels and contrast ratio - if you can be bothered and/or they're within the same vicinity :)

The Dell U2311H is sufficiently fast for the vast majority of games I've thrown at it, so I'm curious as to what exactly a "gaming orientated" IPS monitor will bring, aside from the "thru mode" which gives no/low input lag. The 10 or so milliseconds of input lag on the U2311H is already imperceivable to me.

I think it's just part of the marketing drive really. Along with the 'home user' aesthetic and LED backlighting (and 'cool' remote control). I just hope they don't somehow compromise on the all-important image quality on the way. I also hope NEC haven't made a mistake with their EA232WMi backlighting! :(

Yeah it's bizarre, home user aesthetic = cheap glossy plastic and a limited stand, looks like the only thing you can do is tilt it.

Also that remote has what, 12 buttons? I'm not even sure what it's purpose is, Flatpanels reckon they'll have TV tuners in them, so then it's not really a gaming monitor, but a multimedia one. I know something like the Eizo Foris FS2331 has a remote that you must use in order to control the OSD, which some have complained about since it's the only way to do so.

A welcome feature for some is probably the 2x HDMI ports with audio out meaning those with consoles should give it a look, but I'd guess the price of the monitor to be on dear side.

Of course, this is all somewhat baseless conjecture and bashing before the product has even been reviewed so I guess I/we will have to wait and see and hope that LG deliver some quality goods.
