24" Monitor

From gaming to programming.

I'm looking at about £160-180 and have been looking at the samsungs as they see very appealing!

There is no visual difference between DVI and HDMI on a 60Hz monitor, but you are right - HDMI is a little bit 'neater'. The Samsung B2430H is an excellent monitor. The build quality and image quality, in my opinion, far outclasses anything else in its pricerange (including the beloved BenQ G2420HDBL). We have a little bit about the monitor on our website's 'top 10 monitors' section and some user discussions if you want to take a look (link in sig).

Thanks for that PCM2, i'm wondering how far, if at all the monitor can tilt? Or is it a case of sticking a book under the back of the stand!?

I'm not sure how good the Samsung you link to is as I can't seem to find any expert reviews. However, samsung do tend to make good monitors, so it is not likely to be terrible.

The BenQ on the other hand is widely known to be a solid monitor and great for gaming.

As for HDMI vs DVI, it really depends on the cable you use TBH. IF you are using a dual link DVI cable then obviously it will be thicker and less flexible because it can support twice the bandwidth of a HDMI v1.3 cable. However, if you get a single link DVI cable, it should be the same thickness as a HDMI cable.

HDMI and DVI are electronically compatible - so the image quality is the same.

Edit: PCM2, good to hear you have had some experience with this monitor - if you say it is better, then it is better. Will you be posting a review of it on your site, or is it very similar to the BX2350 you have already reviewed?

I think the BenQ is a really good panel for the price but I do think that the Samsung had a slight edge in image and build quality. I haven't thoroughly reviewed either panel though (as you've probably noticed) but in my short time with both I certainly rate the build quality and far less noticeable dithering and smoother colour gradients on the Samsung more highly. For some reason Samsung doesn't have any of the new 'plum' series in their labs for proper testing at the moment. I'd say that the B2250 was quite similar to the BX2350 in terms of performance (which is a good thing) although the BX2350 did have a slight edge in terms of brightness and its lovely stand. Given the price difference though... ;)

As for tilting - it's the same as most TN panels. It's limited to around 30 degrees or so.

It's difficult to get a sense of it without actually picking it up and prodding it, but the BenQ certainly has a 'cheap' and fragile plasticy feel to it that I personally am not a fan of. The Samsung is more elegant. Maybe I should work for Samsung's PR department.. LOL.

Another quick Q, will i really notice much difference between the contrast ratio's on the BenQ and the Samsung? Does this just mean that the BenQ's black will be deeper?

To be honest, the quoted contrast ratios are not accurate for actual use. (There is no standard testing procedure for dynamic contrast ratio and manufacturers keep coming up with new ways to game it to come up with higher numbers, even though it has no benefitial effect on image quality when in use).

In the real world both monitors will have very similar contrast ratios, at a guess around the 1000:1 mark for image contrast ratio (static).

Rightio, the BenQ just had a really big number next to it :p so I thought there may be a bit of a difference. Thanks for the help :)
