which matches the slot on the motherboard.

could this be my problem ?

The -5v line isn't used on most modern motherboards, a couple in the past few years still appear to require them (possibly MSI although I'm not 100%) but for most it isn't necessary so if it works and is stable I wouldn't worry about it. :)

i noticed the same on my corsair psu which arrived today, thought nothing of it as i was confused as to how to get the extra four pins off (old mobo)

works fine though

edit: pretty sure i remember it being to do with some 'wake on' feature for usb or similar

weird... my OCZ 600watt GameXstream has the -5v there - I happen to know because on my old motherboard for awhile I used the OCZ DDR Booster which needed it to be there or the onboard diagnostic LED display didn't work...

Haha... snap! I also was confused at the same time... with why I only had 20 pins on motherboard. As they say.... READ THE [insert word] MANUAL.
