24 pin PSU connectors

I am planning to get an Abit IP35-E motherboard and a C2D cpu, on my current opty 146 rig my Asrock mobo has a 20 pin power connector. So its looks like I will have to upgrade to a new PSU with a proper 24 pin connector.

I have seen 20 pin to 24 pin PSU converter cables but I am guessing this is not a safe route to go. I have also noticed that a lot of PSU's are 20 pin but with a 4 pin converter. I had read on one website that the newer generation of motherboards can be fussy about this and need proper 24 pin connectors.

Could anyone offer any suggestions on a lower price end PSU that would be up for the job? I would like to do a little overclocking and use an X1900 256 card atm. I am guessing I will have to forget any ideas of my current 450w psu to work without causing any risk!

Not necessarily true, if the PSU is a good make and has twin 12v rails you will be OK. The power requirements of PCs tends to be rather exaggerated, there's a rather good thread showing exactly what wattage PCs use in these forums somewhere if I couldfind it.

I ran a C2D system with a GA-P35-S3 mobo, 7600GT, 3 hdds, 2 optical drives, 4 fans and OC'd to 3Ghz with an Enermax 420W ATX1.3 power supply with no problems using a 20-24pin adaptor. I now have a Corsair 520W - 'cos the wife bought it for my b'day (how did she know ;) ). This is what I would suggest you get if you need to get a new one - they are under £70 and worth it - sooo quiet. My only question to Corsair is why don't they make a 450W version, which would be ideal for many people and cheaper too.

Hope this helps

Connectors are 4 quid, Well worth a try i'd say.
