Hi a friend has just bought some bits to upgrade his machine and it would appear that the case has come with a psu that has a 24 pin connector. Well he only has a 20 pin socket on the mobo so does he have to get one of those adaptors or will it work with the extra pins redundant at the side of the mobo socket.

Cheers.

Chances are the extra 4 pins on the 24-pin connector are clipped on to the 20-pins, in which case they can be removed by simply pulling the 4-pin connector away from the 20-pin connector.

Both my Hiper Type-R 580W & Enermax Liberty 620W have 24-pin connectors fashioned in this way, so I'd assume it's a generic thing to ensure backwards compatibility.
