Hi,

I'm going to need a switch soon, once I've run ethernet cabling throughout the house.

Anyone have any thoughts on the following tp-link ones or something else you'd recommend?

TL-SG1024DE (Easy Smart)

TL-SG2424 (Smart)

TL-SG3424 (L2 Managed)

Although it's for the home I'm also going to be looking at putting a pbx with voip and work from home at times. I therefore think I could do with something more than an unmanaged switch so I can have some QoS controls. Anyone know how they compare energy wise as their green technology states up to 40% less energy but this is rather ambiguosly stated as being in comparison to one of their regular switches. It doesn't state which or whether the one their referring to is typical of their non green line up.

I like the look of Trendnet they have a model called eco green or something similar. Lowest power usage I could find.

Think it's around 90 quid if I remember rightly

I think you probably mean this one or the desktop equivalent but their GREENnet tech doesn't make its way above the unmanaged range. This caught my eye initially until I spent longer looking, it only has a 3 year warranty and I think I've ruled out unmanaged switches now that I've understood a bit more. We don't have a great internet service so I think some QoS settings would help to priorities what needs to run smooth at different times of the day/night.

So far the TL-SG1024DE (Easy Smart) with its energy efficiency tech. is looking tempting but I need to understand what I'd be missing in comparison to the TL-SG2424 or the TL-SG3424.

I would go for the TP Link switches since they support Layer 2 (VLAN) functionality. You may not need them at the moment but they are extremely useful if you start doing anything clever around network configurations.

Still looking into this, had a brief look at the HP 1810-24G v2 but I noticed with that, it was only web managed and did not have any CLI.

Am waiting on a response from TP-Link with regards to energy for the SG2424 & SG3424.

I also noticed whilst looking at 24 port Gigabit switches in general that some make reference to IPv6. What do people here think about the importance of that being included in the features?

Did you manage to pick a Switch yet?

From my understanding with IPv6, it will only be of interest to people that have multiple internet IP addresses and are not using NAT. This means that if you had multiple servers in your office for example, in the future when IPv6 is a requirement, those servers will need to have an IPv6 address to work so the 'switch' will have to support IPv6 to use these addresses.

Hi, I think I may have found a model that ticks a lot of boxes whilst still remaining well priced. The model is a Dlink DGS-1210-28 from their web smart+ range.

http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/business...t/dgs-1210-series-gigabit-smart-plus-switches

*IPv6 support
*Eco energy features
*Voice VLAN
*QoS features
*Limited lifetime warranty (5 years beyond EoL)
*Shallow depth, supports mounting in a shallow wall bracket along with patch panel.

I'm not really sure as to IPv6 being a requirement but since some do include features relating to it, that it would be safer to be covered by one that had such features.

I also stumbled upon the following article...

I'm still waiting to hear back from tp-link with regards to energy consumption and whether they plan to release an IPv6 firmware. My enquiry is awaiting final confirmation from an engineer regarding these matters but is apparantly being held up a little due to some national holiday in China.

I have the DGS-1210-28 which works a treat, easy to setup and supports VLANs which is important for my test rig. You can also setup authentication on defined ports either locally or from a Radius server. Which if you are security minded is must have to protect sections of your network.

Although it has -28 in its name it is only 24 ports, the additional 4 SFP ports are duplicates of the last 4 1Gbit ports (either or, but not both).
I got mine for around £85, price seems to fluctuate a lot over a short period of time and I’ve seen it up as high as £130.

I just wish OcUK stocked these or similar, I did ask and they said they are always looking to enhance thier product range. I guess was over 12months ago and they still don't stock a managed or smart switch!

You got a good price ASE001, cheapest I've found is £113 but have seen it at a lot more too. There's another model very similar DGS-1210-24 but seems older and is more expensive, could see very little difference.
