Cheaper to manufacture mostly. 1920x1080 is "True HD" used by TV's so the panels are made in higher quantities.
This is a really sad development. I'm currently looking for another 1920x1200 24" monitor and in about six months for one more but now I'm not even sure if the resolution still exists mid-2011. 1920x1080 is simply not even an option with Eyefinity as I already have superior 1920x1200 monitors.
I bought my first 1920x1200 resolution monitor nearly five years ago. During those five years the industry has moved backwards. Stupid marketing people.
professional grade monitors intended for photo editing and the like should remain in the 16:10 aspect ratio
Also, I believe that 30" monitors will continue to be in 16:10 for the foreseeable future.
Yep, no doubt there will be few products out there with 16:10 aspect ratio. It's just that more and more often those are either priced way, way higher or are, as you said, meant for photo editing and such. Meaning they might lack in response times, might lack features I desperately need such as pixel mapping/aspect ratio mapping etc. Mainstream gaming monitors are mostly 16:9 now but I'm looking for reasonably priced 16:10 monitor for gaming.
