Hi All

I am looking to get a widescreen monitor in the next couple of months, I currantly own a veiwsonic VX912, I was going to 22" widescreen thinking my graphics card (ati 1800XT) could easily handle the native resolution, but I am now thinking could my graphics card handle the native resolution of a 24".

Or can those with 24" monitors tell me how do they handle resolutions other than the native, and how do they look?

Apparently gaming outside of native resolutions is poor to look at. I will let someone else confirm this though.

It will boil down to what type of games you play - but I'm going to get a 24" and will be replacing my X1900XT without doubt.

I wouldn't be too hopeful on an 1800XT for newly released (and future) titles.

I've got an X800XT and a Dell 2407 and it can handle games fine at 1920x1200, you do have to turn a few settings down though, such as aa and af.

If it still struggles you can run at 1680x1050 and the picture still looks pretty good.

Just use some common sense.
if you want to play Oblivion or S.T.A.L.K.E.R or any demanding game then you really want an 8800GTX or you're going to be playing a lot of games at mid settings.
Anything less will be a comprise.
All depends how seriously you take your gaming really.

P.S.

Oblivion and S.T.A.L.K.E.R look utterly breathtaking at this res with max or custom settings. I could never go to a smaller resolution and now Im damned to have to upgrade to the best vid card as and when games demand it.
worth every penny imo though.

I used to play some my games at 1680x1050 on my dell 24" because my x1900xt-x couldn't handle the 1920x1200 res without slow down...and the games looked fine to me...

Got an X1800 XT here (256 mb) and there's several games I can't run at 1680*1050 on high settings. For instance Fear, Stalker and Oblivion I have to run at 1280*800 (0xAA 8xAF). To get those games to run smooth in 1920*1200 on an X1800 XT you'd need to be using minimum settings and then the games would look awful, so there's just no point in doing that. Oblivion in 1920*1200 on high settings (but still with 0xAA) with an X1800 XT gets you a measly 13 fps average which I would find unplayable -

The good news though is that running games out of native res isn't as big a deal as it used to be since screens upscale better than they used to. Those games above which I ran in 1280*800, honestly they looked fine.
