25 years in jail for Hacking?

Its not just that he hacked... it is about what he hacked and what he was / could have been able or intending to do with the information he stole. A person's personal information is just that, personal, and anyone stealing that info should be severly punished.

That is the maximum sentence the crimes he commited carry. As he hasn't been convicted yet we have no idea what actual sentence he will get.

I wonder what Murdoch will get, his firewall of cash probably protects him from the law.

Standard US prosecution technique.

Put together a bundle of charges (ranging from 25 years down to a few months), then 'let him off' the big ones if he admits to the lesser ones. Conviction secured, police state wins, 'justice is served' [sic].

Given how this lot acted (LulzSec) I just find it funny.

It'll be interesting to hear what his new prison name will be..... I think he looks like a Mandy or Margaret...:D

Though as mentioned the sentences are the maximum and not necessarily what he will get, unless we send him to the US and they may decide to make an example of him.

On one hand, I feel like that's a bit excessive, considering that perpetrators of violent crimes can often get less.*

On the other hand, knowing the huge financial damage Lulzsec must have done to their victims, e.g. PSN, I can kind of understand it.

*Yes I realise that is the maximum and not necessarily what he will actually get, but still.

This. It's 2 different levels of crime, but both are similarly damaging in different ways.
I feel it's too long especially when rapists get under 20 years half the time, but hey ho. :o

I doubt he will be sentenced anywhere near that 25 years. Probably not even 1/5th of that.

He's guilty of hacking, but it's not like breaking into the militarys computers and selling secrets to the terrorists.

They have probably caused millions worth of damage to the businesses they targets.

Penalty system is all messed up. People get 4 years for writing a victimless comment on the internet. Other people get 30 years for shooting a gun at a helicopter and not hitting anything. Another guy gets 10 years minimum for killing another boy who moaned about being thrown with conkers and then they send someone away for potentially 25 years for defacing websites. America is worse though with that one guy got three life sentences for introducing a drug dealer to another drug buyer and sitting in the same room as the purchase took place.

These judges and prosecutors should be held liable for murder (theft of life) when they force someone to sit in a jail for the rest of their life for a victimless crime.

Seems very harsh...although what i cant understand about hackers...they are clever enough to break into websites, steal money etc...but not good enough to cover their tracks and get caught?
