I was wondering would having 2x 768mb gtx 460 sli perform as well as a gtx570 or ati 6970?

To Sli id need to upgrade my mobo. But will my Cpu bottleneck it either way?

your CPU would be a pretty big bottleneck in most games. personally i'd get a phenom II X4 955 BE assuming your motherboard supports it and an GTX 560Ti MSI twin frozr III.

it might go a bit over budget, but you could make some of the money up by selling your current CPU

oh, what make/model PSU do you have?

Erm i think the PSU model is Ocz 850watt plus 80 gold. Currently at work using my mobile to post. The Cpu would fetch 30quid tops with it overclocked. My mobo only supports 95w processors. I just upgraded my case to fit future upgrades. will supply more specs when Im home

For £250 id be looking at getting a 2500k and motherboard, then saving for a graphics upgrade at a later date. Inevitably any worthwhile graphics upgrade will be bottlenecked by the x2

ah, so it doesnt support the phenom. i guess a mobo +CPU upgrade is on the horizon, but you realistically arent going to be able to do that and graphics in one go.

what graphics card do you have currently, and what do you do with your computer mostly?

Well that's the thing. My budget wouldn't be enough for a 2500k and a 'z' series mobo.

My gtx card is a gtx460 768mb. Core clock overclocked from 712mhz to 901mhz

That's unfortunate that your mobo has limited your upgrade path. A retail i5 2500K and the P series MSI P67A-GD53 comes to £280 with the delivery.

Is your RAM DDR3? If you are using DDR2 it won't be compatible with new mobos sadly. Which means more expense :(

Your 460 is still a reasonable gfx card. Your current cpu really isnt cutting the mustard for gaming. I would upgrade the core of the system first then worry about adding SLI or replacing the gfx card later.

With regards to your original question. 2x gtx460 in sli will be almost on par with gtx570 or 6970 however the gains of the upgrade will be limited by your processor quite heavily.

If you buy an 2500k and mobo and then sell your old mobo and cpu then you will be able to get the net price down to within your budget.

+1 SLI is a good choice if you're on a budget.

as reaper has already stated the cpu will be big bottleneck, in my opinion i don't think you should go with sli its up to you of course but ive tried it and i had tons of micro stuttering dont know if it would be that bad with the 460's but i'd rather not, maybe you'd want to upgrade mobo and cpu and gfx in future when you have the funds
