Hi,

I have a system that I built in 2007/8 that I have upgraded a few times (last time in 2011/12) and overclocked, but it is starting to show its age and I don't have the cash to start fresh at the moment. I'm not sure if it is worth it with my current budget. My current specs are:

Case: Lian-Li PC-7A PLUS II Midi-Tower
PSU: Corsair HX 520W ATX Modular SLI

CPU: Intel E6750 @ 3.2Ghz
Mobo:Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3
RAM: GeIL 2GB (4x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz
GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 460
SSD: 120GB - can't remember what

Would getting an cheap modern motherboard coupled with something like an intel i5 4440 + 8GB ram be possible with my current PSU?

Thanks. Yeah, I was looking at that bundle. I'm guessing that if later on I wanted to upgrade the graphics card to something more modern I might need a newer PSU? I helped a friend diagnose a faulty PSU he recently bought by letting him borrow mine, and we found that we couldn't connect my 2007/8 PSU to his modern 2013/14 graphics card. I'm glad to hear that a modern motherboard should be fine.

Yes.

Bigger GFX card may need a stronger (they also deteriorate over time, yours is 5+ years old?) PSU.

In fact it could be even older as here is a review from 2006 - http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=18

If for any reason it doesnt work (ATX standards change over time) then a new PSU will be required.

Another option is a Z97 board and i5+8GB,

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4440 3.10GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £137.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £61.99
1 x TeamGroup Xtreem LV "Frost Edition" 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-21300C11 2666MHz Dual Channel Kit £59.99
Total : £269.57 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Overclocking will be limited, but maybe the Z97 will be a touch more future proof.

You'll definitely need a new Psu, if you decide to get a new Gpu. Your HX520 has no PCIE connectors.
