So guys Im in the market for a new cpu - Anything around the £250 mark would be ideal.

Dual core is really a must - will be trying to oc a little.

AMD Opteron UP 165 vs AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ I guess.

Or should I save my money and get the 3800+ and oc this?

Well the Opteron 165 has 1MB of cache on each core as opposed to the 4200 which only has 512KB on each core. The Opteron would be the better choice of the two.

I'd say your choice should be between the X2 3800 or the Opteron 165 if you are happy to overclock. The X2 will cost £200 and the Opteron £260, you may be able to find them cheaper elsewhere, both would be very good. I'd be inclined to go for the Opteron if you have the extra money, but the 3800 is fantastic value for money.

Sorry that this is a bit of a thread overtake, but, i'm still deciding which CPU would be best for gaming, X2 4400+ or Opy 170. I've heard the Opteron runs cooler and is based on the same chip as the FX60, therefore being able to overclock better than the X2. Would I be better off with the Opy?

They are basically the same chip, the 4400/170/FX-60 are all built on the same core, just with clock differences and a slightly different fab process for the Opty. From what I have seen, X2's seem to be hitting a wall around 2.8 Ghz.

Opterons seem more stable though s probably best to go with the 170 if you want to oc.
