by this Thursday ill have a spare £250 to spend on a nice new gpu

i was originally going down the line of getting a 7850 as they are well proven but i realized i could get the 7870 which although isn't massively faster and does not overclock any higher i figured that since ive got the money i might as well get it.

before i do though is there anything better for £250 or is a 7870 as good as im going to get?

i should point out that im not bothered if its nvidia or amd.

the thing is though the 670 is way over kill and id also have to wait another month to be on the safe side financially.

im sort of torn between the 7850/70 i know the performance gap is stupid considering the extra £50 but then i have the money for the 7870 so its like a why not kinda thing. eh :(

i could just go and buy a 7850 tommorow :/ ill have to mull it over

haha seems im being pushed to the 7850, everyone does seem to be extolling the virtues of them and they are proven to run the games i want very well (skyrim mainly)

guess i could save myself the money and get the 7850 and use the rest on items i need to improve, keyboard mouse fan filters etc etc

cheers for the help

I reccomend SLI MSI Twinfrozr GTX 560 Tis for £250, second hand though.

Coming soon to a members market near you ;)

Put that £75 left over towards a rainy day.

But the 7870 is a decent card nevertheless. Check user reviews though.

Skyrim I've not played, maybe best asking members how well it performs with game mods and stuff.

I'm in a similar position to the OP, in that I have roughly the same amount to spend on a GPU. Is a 7850 much of an improvement on a 470? I play at 1680x1050 but there is a chance I'll be going to full 1080 soon (not guaranteed).

I've seen 580's from OcUK mentioned for around the £240 mark, wouldn't they be better than the 7850 (when they're both 'clocked)?

*sorry for the hijack OP*

A GTX 580 at 900mhz is *slightly* faster than a 7850 at 1200mhz. In fact, it would probably be about a tie. The thing is though, the 7850:

- is cheaper
- has more vram
- uses less power
- generates less heat and is therefore more quiet

The 7850 is really a GTX 580 killer IMO. It's better all around and cheaper. You just have to be willing to overclock and make sure you have good cooling on it. The Asus card is the best IMO.

Use this as a guide to performance of each card I list below.

if this is true is there any point in buying a ATI 79xx or GTX 6xx ?
