£250 to spend

This overclocked GTX 275 is the fastest you will get in your price range. May be able to get more performance will a multi card setup, does your mobo support it?

Edit : Actually, scratch that. The 4890 seems to be faster at stock, and I know the core clock can be overclocked to 950-1000Mhz will stock cooling.

I would suggest the Asus 4890 for voltage tweak, £45 cheaper than the 275 ans you should get the same performance or maybe ~2 less FPS at worst.

Just realised I'm no longer a thug, go avatar!

mmm i think i will have to think about it for the next few days and then make the trek down to ocuk hq.

if you have £250 i would personally wait for the new cards, they are not that far away now. up to you really but if your current card runs games fine i would say to wait.. the performance difference should be quite a bit.

Oh them, I thought u had some inside knowledge of a secret GFX release :D

I have been in a similar position and waited for the new stuff to come out. After a bit of experience I can say there is always a new "Jesus" part 2-3 months away. Unless you want to wait forever, just screw up your courage and buy a part which has performance you are happy with, at a price you can afford.

Well, the incomming traffic of new products (cards, cpu's, etc) in Computer industry won't stop!

So if he has £250, spend it, HD4870/GTX260 can be found ~£120
If you want bit better, go for HD4870 or GTX275, choose cheaper!

if it were 6 or 8 months away i would not wait.. but 2-3 months?

if something is just around the corner i dont see the point in buying something which is going to be outclassed soon after. Besides we are talking about new generation cards, not the usual slight speed bump.

There always seems to be something new coming out in a few months. Plus there is the possiblity that it will get delayed.

It's a knock up between, do you want better performance now? or can you deal with waiting and keeping your current performance until a newer card comes out?

Personaly I would say upgrade now, new hardware always comes out, it's inevitable that if you buy something now at the top of the range in 6 months it won't be.
